HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Spartans started fast, opening up a 7-0 lead in the first 1:01. Katie Wagner ripped down a board and converted her put-back for York's first points. Morgan Kuehne scored 20 seconds later, and then after a turnover, Beth Wiseley, who was given a standing ovation during the Play 4 Kay opening ceremonies, nailed a three, forcing Southern Virginia to use an early time out. After the break, Kuehne scored again, and York led 9-0. With 3:13 to play in the first, the lead was still eight points, but the Knights began cutting into it. A quick 6-0 run cut the York lead to 17-15, but a jumper at the buzzer from Wiseley gave the Spartans a 21-17 advantage after 10 minutes.

• The lead fluctuated between one and six points throughout much of the second quarter, and with just 1:16 remaining, York led just 36-34. Katie McGowan kick started a massive run to end the half by catching the ball in the post, ripping through a defender and then finishing at the rim while being fouled. She made the ensuing free throw. McGowan corralled a missed shot on the other end, leading to a layup from Sam Mocniak. To end the half, Kayla Ferris earned a steal and then a bucket, completing a 7-0 run in the final 1:16 of the half to give York a 43-34 lead at the break. On the defensive end, York implemented a zone that stifled the Knights' prominent post players while also forcing 11 first-half turnovers.

• Mocniak drilled a three early in the third quarter, and York's lead ballooned to 15 after Kuehne converted a layup in transition. The Spartans excelled in the open floor, scoring 16 fast break points in the first half. The turnovers continued to rack up in the third quarter, and York kept feeding McGowan, who began to exploit SVU's interior defense. With 3:11 left in the third, York led 61-38, exploding with a 17-4 run, with nine of those points coming from McGowan. At the end of the period, the Green and White led 68-42.

• The Spartan lead only grew in the final 10 minutes, continuing to force turnovers on the defensive end while converting them to easy buckets on the other end of the floor. York also drew 26 fouls, leading to 37 free throw attempts en route to a 95-60 win.
