Spartans Have Triple Digit Fun in Win at SVU

BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College women's basketball squad exploded for 63 second half points en route to a 106-89 Capital Athletic Conference win at Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Buena Vista, Virginia.

The Spartans have won three straight and improve to 5-1 in the league as they are tied for second place in the conference.

How It Happened:

• The first quarter was played at a fast pace as the period featured made buckets and turnovers. York sprinted out to an 11-4 lead just over three minutes into the game. The Knights answered with a 10-3 run, tying the game at 14. The remainder of the quarter featured three more ties and two lead changes as the teams finished the period deadlocked at 22.

• York got off to a fast start in the second quarter, racing out to a nine-point lead at 34-25 with 6:08 left in the quarter. The Green and White pushed it up to ten less than a minute later but the Knights got up off the deck and answered the Spartans. The Knights ripped off a 19-6 run over the final five minutes of the quarter to take a 46-43 lead at the break.

• The opening five minutes of the third quarter featured back and forth basketball with the teams answering each other as the score continued to see-saw. There were 11 lead changes before the Spartans forged in front on a Sam Mocniak three with 3:29 left in the quarter. That started a 17-5 Spartan run that pushed their lead to 11 at 74-65 with 52 second left in the quarter. The Green and White would take an eight-point lead to the fourth as York scored 31 points in the third quarter.

• The fourth started with a Mocniak three and York continued to build on the lead from there. The Spartans pushed the lead to 15 on a Katie Wagner lay up just a minute and a half into the quarter. The Knights cut the Spartan lead to nine twice, the second time coming at 94-85 with 3:09 left in the game. The Green and White finished the game outscoring the Knights 12-4 en route to the 17-point win.

The Spartans are now 8-1 all-time against the Knights and they have won five in a row in the series … York has scored over 100 points against the Knights twice in the nine game series … the 106 points are the highest point total of the year, besting the second best total by 10 points (96 vs. Rowan) … senior Sam Mocniak had a new career-high as she went a school-record 9-for-9 from the field as she tallied 21 points … the 9-for-9 is the first time that a Spartan women's basketball player has been perfect from the field in more than six attempts from the floor … Mocniak also went 2-for-2 from three and 1-for-2 from the line … Mocniak has reached double figures for the Spartans five times this year … Mocniak also notched a career-high six steals in the win … senior Morgan Kuehne notched 20 points, the firs time this year she has gotten into the 20's in scoring … Kuehne has now been in double figures in four straight games and eight times the year … junior forward Katie McGowan tied a career-high as she poured in 24 points with 18 of those points coming in the decisive second half … McGowan now has three games in the 20's and nine double figure games for the year … senior Katie Wagner reached double figures for the fourth straight game and the tenth time this year … Wagner is averaging 17.5 points per game in her last four games … York tied a season-high with their 25 assists in the win … York turned it over a season-high 25 times and still scored 106 points … York shot a season-high 59.7% from the floor including a blistering 72.2% in the second half … York's 20 steals are a season-high, three better than the previous high of 17 against Rowan … the Spartans held a 26-2 advantage in fast break points … The Spartans held a plus four margin on the glass, the seventh time this year they have outrebounded an opponent in a game … there were 17 lead changes in the game and seven ties … the 17-point win is the fifth double figure win for York … York has won three straight after losing three straight … the game ends a season-long four-game road trip as York went 3-1 during the time away from Wolf Gymnasium.

The Spartans finally return to the friendly confines of Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Wednesday evening when they host Penn State Harrisburg in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time is set for 6:00 pm in York.
