YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team opened their run in the 2014 NCAA Division III Tournament with a 76-54 win over La Roche College on Friday night in York.
The Spartans improve to 26-2 overall while the Redhawks have their season come to a close with a mark of 23-5.
The game was ugly early on as the Spartans struggled to take care of the ball while the Redhawks couldn't find the bottom of the basket. York pushed out to an early 10-4 lead but La Roche went on a 13-6 run to take a 17-16 lead with 9:47 left in the half.
The Spartans responded much like they have all season as York fashioned a game-changing 19-0 run, turning the one point deficit into an 18-point advantage. La Roche's LaShauna Brothers ended the Redhawks' scoreless drought but Spartan senior Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) tallied the final two buckets of the half as York took a 39-20 lead to the break.
York kept the momentum rolling in the second half as the Spartans started the half with a 16-6 run to push the lead to 29. Freshman Sam Hruz (White Marsh, Md./Mercy) capped the flurry with a three pointer and a lay up.
The Spartan lead would not fall below 21 until the Redhawks used a 7-0 run against the York reserves to cut the lead to 19 before freshman Dalida Camdzic (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) scored the final three points of the game to provide York with the final 22-point margin of victory.
York received another huge effort from Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) as she notched her 41st career double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Hicks was 10-for-18 from the floor and 4-for-8 from the free throw line. She added two assists, a blocked shot and a steal in 27 minutes of work. Haley contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots for the Green and White. Haley was 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line. Senior Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) was the third Spartan in double figures with 14 points as she was 4-for-8 from the floor including 2-for-4 from three and 4-for-6 from the charity stripe. Hruz had another balanced effort with seven points, a career-high seven assists, and six rebounds in her 18 minutes of work.
Brothers led La Roche with 15 points on 5-of-14 shooting while she also pulled in six rebounds. Shataya White pulled in eight rebounds while she also had four points, four steals, two assists, and a blocked shot for the Redhawks.
La Roche became the 14th Spartan opponent to be held under 30% shooting from the floor as The Redhawks went 20-for-70 (28.6%) from the floor while they went 7-for-25 (28%) from three. York finished the game shooting 50% from the field but just 5-for-13 (38.5%) from three. York went 15-for-22 (68.2%) from the stripe.
La Roche forced the Spartans into 24 turnovers including 15 in the first half. The turnovers didn't kill the Green and White as La Roche only got 18 points off the Spartan miscues. York forced 18 La Roche turnovers, which resulted in 22 points for the Spartans.
York dominated on the glass, outrebounding their guests 49-37 as York outscored the Redhawks 38-24 in the paint.
The Spartans improve to 16-0 at Charles Wolf Gymnasium for the year. York is ranked tenth in the country according to d3hoops.com and 14th in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll.
