DOVER, DEL. – The York College women's basketball squad opened Capital Athletic Conference play in impressive fashion as the Green and White notched a 79-48 conference win at Wesley College on Sunday afternoon in Dover, Delaware.
The Spartans improve to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the league. Wesley falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Spartans raced out to a quick 6-0 lead courtesy of back-to-back threes from Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) and Jess Selby (Upper Marlboro, Md./Calverton School). The Spartan lead would quickly grow to 19-4 as the Green and White pressured the Wolverines early and often.
The Wolverines cut the Spartan lead to 13 twice over the next three minutes but York scored 11 of the final 15 points of the first half to take a 39-18 lead to the break.
The second half was much of the same as the Spartans played well in earning the conference win. York's lead did not fall below 21 and grew to as many as 33 before York settled for the 31-point win. The margin was the largest of the season for the Spartans.
Three seniors led the Spartans as Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation), Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic), and Murphy all reached double figures for York. Haley notched 15 points on a highly efficient 5-of-6 from the floor while she went 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Haley added eight rebounds in her 19 minutes of work. Hicks nearly had another double-double as she had 14 points and nine rebounds. The Wolverines couldn't stop Hicks as the senior went to the free throw line 12 times, converting 10 of those attempts on her way to the double figure effort. Murphy added 11 points including three more triples as she is quickly approaching Heather Kessler's school record of 169. Murphy has 161 triples for her Spartan career.
Karli McFatridge (York, Pa./York Catholic) added nine points, three assists, and three rebounds in her 25 minutes of action. Junior Kailee Knight (Crofton, Md./South River) was big off the bench as she pulled in eight rebounds in a mere 13 minutes of action. Knight also had four points and two blocked shots as she continues her strong start to the season.
Brionna Johnson led Wesley with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Johnson was 2-for-16 from the floor and 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Monique Miller and Roniece Williams each added 11 points for the Wolverines.
York finished the game shooting 44.4% from the floor including 7-of-19 (36.8%) from three. The Spartans were very good from the line as they went 24-of-30 (80%) from the stripe.
York harassed Wesley into 23.8% shooting from the field for the game. It was York's best defensive effort of the year and it was the fourth time York has held an opponent to less than 30% shooting from the field.
The Spartans outrebounded the Wolverines 51-34, which made up for the Spartans committing 23 turnovers in the win. Fortunately for York, Wesley only converted the Spartan miscues into 18 points. Wesley attempted nine more field goals in the game while York had 10 more free throw attempts.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they host CAC newcomer Penn State Harrisburg. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
