Haley and Hicks Power Spartans Past F&M

LANCASTER, PA – The York College women's basketball team remains perfect as the Spartans went on the road for the first time this year and came home with a 63-50 victory at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, PA.

The Spartans improve to 4-0 overall while the Diplomats fall to 1-3 as they have lost three straight after a season-opening win.

The Spartans took an early 11-6 lead in the contest as York got off to a good start in their first road game of the year. The Diplomats trimmed the York lead to a pair at 16-14 but the Spartans responded with a quick 6-0 spurt to push their lead to 22-14. F&M cut the York lead to four twice over the next four minutes before the Spartans went on an 11-2 run to take a 35-22 lead. The spurt was keyed by a pair of Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) triples as the senior forward ended the first half with 15 points.

The Diplomats scored the final two buckets of the half as York's lead was cut to 35-26 at the intermission.

F&M carried the momentum of their last two hoops of the first half as they scored six of the first eight points of the second half, cutting the York lead to just five at 37-32. After a Spartan bucket pushed the lead back to seven, the Diplomats got back-to-back hoops, trimming York's advantage to just three at 39-36 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game.

The Spartans then fashioned a 12-2 run fueled by senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic). Hicks had seven points on the run as the Spartans started to pull away. While York was finding the bottom of the net, the Diplomats were struggling to score as the Spartan defense fashioned another stellar effort.

York pushed the lead to as many as 16 with 3:34 left before settling for the solid 13 point road victory.

Haley led all scorers with 23 points as she went 10-for-17 from the floor including 2-of-4 from three. Haley also went 1-for-2 from the stripe with four rebounds, two blocked shots, a steal and an assist. Hicks added her second double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds in her 27 minutes of work. Senior Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) was the third Spartan in double figures with 10 points including a pair of treys, two steals, two assists, and a blocked shot. Senior point guard Aja Wallpher (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) handed out seven assists and had one steal in her 30 minutes of play.

Kristina McCarthy led the Diplomats with 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots. She was 6-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line. Emma Lisle added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while she also had four assists for the Dips.

York shot 36.8% for the game including 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three. The Spartans were nearly perfect at the free throw line as they converted 10-for-11 in the win including Hicks' 7-for-7 day at the stripe.

F&M shot 36.5% from the floor including 1-for-9 (11.1%) from distance. The Diplomats went 11-for-17 (64.7%) from the charity stripe.

York finished the game with a 41-37 edge in rebounding including 14 offensive rebounds. York forced 17 Diplomat turnovers, which they turned into 19 points.

The Spartans return to action with a Tuesday night non-conference contest against McDaniel College. Tip time for the annual non-conference clash is set for 6:00 pm at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
