Spartans Clobber Frostburg For Playoff Win

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's basketball team clobbered Frostburg State 74-38 in the first round of Capital Athletic Conference playoffs on Tuesday evening at Wolf Gymnasium.

The Spartans improve to 20-6 overall and advance to the semi-final round of playoffs. Frostburg finishes out their season with an overall record of 6-20.

The game started out very similar to Saturday's game, when these two teams met for the final game of the regular season. Things got out to a slow start and Frostburg was able to gain a small lead in the first few minutes of the half. Ronje James got the Bobcats on the board first with a jump shot at 18:52. The Bobcats would take their biggest lead of the game at 17:22, going up 6-2.

Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) began to turn things around for the Spartans. At 17:22 she hit a jumper and followed it up with another 20 seconds later to tie the game back up. Another jumper by Haley gave the Spartans the lead, which they held onto for the remainder of the game.

The Spartans began to pull away from Frostburg at the 9:58 mark. York went on a 13-0 run to take an 18-point lead. Frostburg only scored three points in the last 10 minutes of the opening half. Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) got hot from long range, hitting back-to-back three's with time winding down and pushed the Spartan lead to 26, the biggest of the half. Stephanie Straka hit a free throw for the Bobcats with one second left to make the halftime score 40-15.

The second half saw much of the same action. Frostburg continued to struggle, especially on the offensive end. A layup by Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) at 15:59 stretched the Green and White's lead to 30 points. A few minutes later, Loreta Tonuzi (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) drained a three pointer from way outside to go up 51-20. Frostburg got a little bit of a spark after Tonuzi's three, going on a 7-0 run and cutting the Spartan lead to 24. The Bobcats kept fighting, but could not seem to close the scoring gap. Megan Lanigan's (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) layup at 3:54 put the Green and White up 68-32. A little over a minute later freshman Abbey Rhodes (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) hit two free throws to give the Spartans their largest lead of the game, 39 points. With time expiring, Lanigan knocked down two free throws and York would finish the game up 74-38.

The Green and White had with three players in double-digits. Leading the way for the Spartans was Haley. She finished the game with 22 points and eight rebounds. Haley has now had over 20 points in four of her last seven games. Hicks and Murphy each chipped in 13 points. Hicks also added nine rebounds and finished just one rebound shy of another double-double. Murphy went 5-6 from the free throw line and sunk two three's. Point guard Aja Wallpher (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) had another tremendous game. Wallpher finished the game will 11 assist and six steals. She also added six points and seven rebounds. Wallpher currently ranks third in the country in both assists and steals.

The Spartans shot 38.1% (24-63) from the field and 81.5% (22-27) from the free throw line. York only knocked down four of their 17 three point attempts (23.5%). The Green and White once again held a wide margin in total rebounds, 50-32, and caused the Bobcats into 20 turnovers. The Spartans finished the game with 12 steals and committed 13 turnovers.

Frostburg was only 28.3% from the field and went 0-for-5 from behind the arc. The Bobcats were 53.3% (8-15) from the free throw line.
