YORK, Pa. – The York College women's basketball team rolled by Frostburg 83-44 in the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Wolf Gymnasium.
The Spartans also honored their two seniors for senior day. Loreta Tonuzi (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) and Megan Lanigan (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) played in their final regular season game at York. Tonuzi finished the game with three points and Lanigan added two of her own.
The game started out slow and Frostburg was able to hang around, keeping the score close. York got on the board first with a layup from Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation). The Spartans never gave up the lead throughout the game.
The Green and White did not start to pull away from the Bobcats until midway through the opening half. At 9:46, Kelsey Murphy (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) drained a three from way outside that proved to be the push the Spartans needed to take complete control of the game. Murphy followed up her three with a fast break layup. Haley then turned around on defense and caused a turnover, which Kailee Knight (Crofton, Md./South River) converted into a fast break basket. Within one minute the Spartans pushed the lead to 10.
The Bobcats continued to fight despite struggling on both ends of the court. Frostburg was able to cut the lead to seven after a jump shot by Brionna Hall, but Julianne Lambert (Hockessin, Del./Padua Academy) followed it up with a beautiful finish on a great back door cut. Minutes later, Lambert came up with a steal, took the ball down the court and finished a traditional three-point play. Aja Wallpher (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) proved to be too much for the Bobcats in the opening half, she recorded 10 assists in just the first 20 minutes of play.
At 2:20, Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) knocked down her 10th point and took less then a half to register her 15th double-double of the season. With time winding down, Murphy drained another three pointer and gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the half, 21. Heading into halftime, York lead Frostburg 44-23.
Entering the second half, the Spartans continued to dominate. The closest the Bobcats would come during the remainder of the game was 23 points. Once again, Haley was the first to score, making a layup at 18:38. A few minutes later, Haley scored another layup while being fouled and sunk the free throw for a three-point play. Wallpher earned her 13th assist off a fireball pass down low to a wide open Hicks, who easily laid the ball in. Murphy sunk another shot from long range with 11:50 remaining and tied her single-game career record with five made three pointers. Knight made two back-to-back layups at 7:53 and recorded her first career double-double. A layup by Hicks with 5:51 left in the game gave the Spartans their largest lead of the night, 75-34. York would continue to hold onto the large lead for the rest of the game.
The Spartans finished the game with four players in double-digits. Leading the way was Hicks with 20 points and 16 rebounds. She went 10-for-14 from the free throw line. Of her 16 rebounds, 11 of them were offensive. Murphy added 17 points and two blocks. Haley chipped in 16 points, while Knight added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Knight's 14 points breaks her current single-game career high that previously stood at 11.
Wallpher had a phenomenal game statistically as well. She recorded seven steals and had a whopping 17 assists. With her seven steals, Wallpher has now recorded over 300 career steals. Her 17 assists breaks not only a school record, but also a Captial Athletic Conference record that has stood since 1991.
Leading the way for the Bobcats was Brynn Arnone. Arnone had 14 points and four rebounds. Ronje James added nine points and seven rebounds.
York shot 42.9% (30-70) from the field and 33.3% (6-18) from long range. The Spartans were 17-for-23 (73.9%) from the free throw line. They outrebounded the Bobcats 54-32 and caused 20 turnovers, while committing only 12.
Frostburg struggled from the field, shooting only 28.3% (15-53) and they faired similar from three-point range, going 2-for-8 (25.%). At the free throw line, the Bobcats were 12-for-18 (66.7%).
The Spartans return to action Tuesday evening for the first round of the CAC playoffs. York will once again host Frostburg for a 7:00 pm matchup.
