#15 Spartans Head to St. Mary's to Open Up CAC Play
YORK, PA - The York College women's basketball team is off to a great start to the 2012-2013 season. The Spartans are currently 5-0 and ranked #15 in the country in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
On Saturday, they travel to play the St. Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks in both teams' opening Capital Athletic Conference game. Last year, York defeated St. Mary's at home 62-45 and captured a hard-fought 60-52 road win at St. Mary's City.
In their last game, York defeated Goucher College 74-45 in a game in Baltimore, Md. Kristen Haley (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) scored 19 points while sophomore forward Kailee Knight (Crofton, Md./South River) contributed 16 rebounds for the Spartans. York went ahead 35-15 by halftime and never looked back, outscoring the Gophers 39-30 in the second half. York shot 82.6% (19-23) from the free throw line and the Spartans defense forced 20 turnovers in the win. The defense has been outstanding in the Spartans hot start. They have held their opponents to 46 points per game and a 29.4% field goal percentage.
St. Mary's is also off to a good start, earning a 3-0 record. Last year, the Seahawks finished in the middle of the conference with an 8-8 conference record, losing in the first round of the CAC playoffs. Senior guard Joanna Murray leads them with 15.0 points per game. Senior guard Pui Sham has also contributed 12.0 points per game.
The Spartans leading scorer through five games is junior forward Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic with 15.5 points per game. Haley is contributing 13.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Junior guard Aja Wallpher (Ellicott City, Md./Seton Keough) has been efficient in getting the primary scorers the ball and leads the team with 5.8 assists per game.
Saturday's game closes out a five game road trip for the Spartans as they return home to face Franklin & Marshall in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night. Tip time from Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
