Sparkman Named MVP as York wins Terry Greene Memorial Tournament

LANCASTER, PA – The York College women's basketball team earned the tournament championship at the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday in Lancaster. The Spartans bested the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays 64-57 to take the title. The tournament championship is the first for the Spartans since November 21, 2009 when they won the Messiah/Wingate Hotel Invitational with wins over McDaniel and Washington College.

The Spartans improve to 2-1 overall as they have won two straight after a season-opening loss at Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays are also 2-1 as they suffered their first setback of the campaign.

York took an early advantage as they led 13-8 just under eight minutes into the game. The Blue Jays then scored seven straight, tying the game to take the 15-13 lead. The Spartans responded with an 8-0 spurt of their own to take a 21-15 lead with 7:22 left in the half. The run was keyed by a three from freshman Taylor Santor. Not to be outdone, the Blue Jays fashioned a 10-0 run to take a 25-21 lead. Senior Brittany Percich hit a three to stop the Blue Jay run. That triple continued the theme of runs as York scored the next seven points of the contest as the York lead was 28-25 with 3:46 remaining in the half. The Blue Jays tied the game at 28, the fourth tie of the game, but York scored four of the final six points of the half to take the 32-30 lead to the break.

Elizabethtown tied the game 13 seconds into the second half but Brittany Hicks hit back-to-back lay ups as the Spartans took a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game. With the Spartan lead sitting at 44-41, York went on a 12-4 run to take a 56-45 advantage as another three from Santor capped the run. The Blue Jays cut the lead to five on back-to-back threes from Jayci Scannapieco and Nadine Yunginger with 2:55 remaining in the game. Senior April Sparkman answered the Blue Jay triples with a three and a pair of free throws to kick the York lead back up to 10 with 1:43 left. The Green and White would hold on to earn the seven-point win.

Sparkman was named the Tournament MVP as the senior tallied 23 points with nine rebounds in her 33 minutes of work. Sparkman canned two threes and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Hicks earned a spot on the All-Tournament team as she added 17 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes of play. She was 7-for-10 from the floor, 1-for-2 from three, and 4-for-5 from the stripe.  Sophomore Kristen Haley added nine points and a game-high nine rebounds while fellow sophomore Aja Wallpher played a solid floor game with a season-high eight assists and only one turnover in 34 minutes. Wallpher also blocked a career-high five shots while she added four steals, four points and three rebounds.

Scannapieco paced the Blue Jays as she poured in 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting including 3-for-4 from three. She also had six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Cheyenne Stonerook added eight points and five rebounds to the Elizabethtown attack.

The Spartans shot just 38.2% from the floor while they went 7-for-19 (36.8%) from three. The Spartans were solid at the free throw line, converting 15-of-20 (75%) in the win. Elizabethtown shot 42.6% from the field including 7-of-17 (41.2%) from three. The Blue Jays struggled from the line as they made just four of their 11 attempts, good for a mark of 36.4%.

The Blue Jays did something the Spartans' first two opponents could not do which was out-rebound the Green and White. Elizabethtown had 37 rebounds to 33 caroms for York. The Spartans did force 22 turnovers, which they converted into 21 points. The Green and White had a season-low 14 miscues in the win.

York has a very short turnaround before their next contest, as they will host Goucher College in their home opener on Tuesday night. Tip time at Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
