DOVER, DEL – The York College women's basketball team staged a furious second-half rally but the uprising fell just short as the Wesley Wolverines downed the Spartans, 54-50, in a key Capital Athletic Conference contest in Dover, Delaware on Wednesday night. The Spartans fall to 12-12 overall and 9-6 in the CAC while the Wolverines improve to 13-10 overall and 8-6 in the league with the victory. Wesley has now won seven straight as they are making a late-season run.
Wolverine senior Cory Boyd led all scorers as she celebrated Senior Night in Dover with 22 points while fellow senior Angie Owens recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Freshman Brittany Hicks led the Green and White with 18 points in the loss.
York got off to a quick start in the game, taking an early 8-3 lead. However, the Wolverines scored 15 of the next 19 points in the game, taking an 18-12 lead with 12:05 remaining in the half. The Spartans trimmed the Wesley advantage to one at 20-19 but York went cold and the Wolverines fashioned a 14-0 run to take a 34-19 lead with 1:22 left in the stanza. Hicks made a pair of free throws to send the Spartans to the half down 34-21.
The Wolverines grew the lead to 14 midway through the second half, setting the stage for the Spartans' furious comeback. Freshman Kelsey Murphy got the Spartan deficit in single digits on a jumper with 8:08 left. The Wolverines got a pair of Owens free throws and a lay up to push it back to double figures but Brittany Percich canned a triple with 3:37 left, starting a 12-3 Spartan run, cutting Wesley's lead to just two with 33 seconds left. The Wolverines' Jazmine Miller split a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left but Murphy couldn't can a good look from three with 13 ticks remaining. The Spartans were forced to foul as Owens split another pair to push the Wolverine lead to 54-50. Wesley got an offensive rebound on Owens' miss, as they were able to run out the clock and hang on for the four-point win.
Boyd finished 8-for-17 from the floor including 4-for-7 from three and 2-for-3 from the free throw line. She also had four assists and two steals in her 40 minutes of action. The Spartans forced Owens into 3-for-13 shooting but she had four offensive boards and 12 defensive caroms. Owens was 6-for-8 from the line while she also had a trio of blocked shots. Miller also reached double figures with 10 points in addition to recording a game-high four steals in her 37 minutes of action.
Hicks was again outstanding despite being banged up throughout the course of the game. The freshman was 7-for-16 from the floor en route to her 18 points. She also had nine rebounds as she narrowly missed a double-double. Murphy added nine points and a career-high nine rebounds in her 36 minutes of work. Murphy was 3-for-6 from the floor including 1-for-3 from downtown and 2-for-2 from the line. Senior Jaimie Sapp added eight points and four rebounds for York.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 32.3% from the floor, 40% (4-for-10) from three and 60% (6-for-10) from the free throw line. Wesley shot 32.1% from the floor, 35.3% (6-for-17) from three while they were 12-for-19 (63.2%) from charity stripe.
The Wolverines finished the game with a 45-41 edge on the glass while they also forced 19 turnovers as the Wolverines collected 15 steals in the game.
The Spartans conclude their 2010-11 regular season on Saturday when they host Salisbury in a CAC contest. Tip time is set for 4:00 pm and will be preceded by Senior Day ceremonies, as York will honor their four seniors.
