FREDERICK, MD – The York College women's basketball team posted a hard-fought 64-59 win at Hood College on Saturday afternoon in Frederick, Md. The Spartans improve to 10-9 overall and 7-4 in the CAC while the Blazers, who upset the Spartans 17 days ago in York, fall to 7-10 overall and 2-8 in the CAC.
The low scoring first half the Spartans jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Blazers fashioned a quick 7-0 spurt to take a 7-4 lead. The Blazer lead grew to five at 12-7 before York scored the next seven to take the 14-12 lead. The two teams traded baskets over the final 5:53 of the half as the squads went to the intermission tied at 19.
After the break, the Spartans really utilized their size advantage as they dumped the ball into the post as Sapp scored the first six points of the half. The Spartans eventually pushed their lead to eight courtesy of a pair of Haley free throws and another Sapp layup as the Spartan lead stood at 29-21.
The Blazers weren't going away as they cut the Spartan lead to 37-36 with 11:32 remaining however York quickly responded with 7-0 spurt powered by three points from Haley, two from Sapp and two more from junior Brittany Percich.
The Spartan lead grew to nine on a Sapp layup with 6:50 left. It was York's largest lead of the game, a mark they would reach again at the 4:11 mark. The Blazers then scored 14 of the next 22 points of the game to draw to within two at 60-58 with 15 second remaining. Fortunately for York, freshman Aja Wallpher canned a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to push the lead back to four. Dyanna Prater split a pair of free throws with nine seconds left but junior Khadija Mitchell drilled two free throws with five seconds left to seal the win.
Haley finished 8-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-10 from the line en route to her 21 points. She also pulled in a team-high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year. Sapp was 7-for-18 from the floor and 5-for-8 from the charity stripe. She pulled in six rebounds and two blocked shots as she provided York with outstanding senior leadership in the game. Wallpher added nine points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals in her 31 minutes of action. Percich played one of her best games in the Green and White as the guard had six points, a career-high eight rebounding including five offensive rebounds. Percich also had four steals in her 29 minutes of action.
Prater led the Blazers with 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She was 3-for-11 from the floor, 1-for-3 from three, and 12-for-15 from the charity stripe. Allyson Lethbridge, who lit up the Spartans in the teams' first meeting, added 16 points and seven rebounds. Briana White was the third Blazer in double figures with 14 points.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 31.3% from the floor, 15.8% (3-for-19) from three, and 21-for-39 (53.8%) from the free throw line. The Blazers shot 30.9% from the field, 26.3% (5-for-19) from three and 71.4% (20-for-28) from three.
The Spartans forced 22 Blazer turnovers as York ended the game attempting nine more field goals for the game. York also had 20 offensive rebounds in the game but the Blazers ended the game holding a slight 48-46 margin in total rebounds.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening as they host St. Mary's College in a huge Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
