Sapp Leads Spartans over Bobcats 81-56

YORK, Pa. – The York College women's basketball team improved their 2010 record to 6-3 (3-1 Capital Atheltic Conference) with a spectacular showing on the hardwood at Charles Wolf Gymnasium Saturday afternoon, defeating Frostburg State (4-4, 2-2 CAC) 81-56.

In a game that was plagued by fouls on both ends of the court, the Spartans strongly held their position in the driver's seat for nearly the entire game as they controlled the pace of play and effectively forced the Bobcats to continually defend against a fast-paced offense. The Green and White took advantage of the Frostburg defense as four of the starting five finished the game with double-digit total points.

Within the first minute of play senior center Jaimie Sapp established her presence as she hit the Spartans' first two shots, en route to a career-high 24-point performance. The up-tempo offense of York also proved to be beneficial for freshman forward Kristen Haley, as she was able to put together a solid double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

As notable as the Spartan offense was throughout the game, the York also applied firm pressure to the Bobcat offense. The Green and White's defensive effort forced a handful of mistakes for which the Spartans were able to capitalize upon – a main reason why York led for 39 consecutive minutes. The Spartans finished with 11 steals on the night, six coming from the hustle of both junior guard Brittany Percich and freshman guard Caitlin Herman.

Although the final score does not reflect, the game was tight through the first 16 minutes of play as the Spartans clutched a 22-19 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. After a crucial three-pointer by senior Gayle Exley, the Spartans rallied to make five consecutive free throws. Herman then collected her own rebound on a missed free throw and drove the lane to complete a lay-up that would extend the lead to 12 with only 21 seconds remaining in the first frame. Almost immediately following, Herman executed the heads-up play of the game by stealing the in-bound pass and sprinting to the corner where she would receive a pass from Percich and drain a long-range jumper to close out the half leading 37-23.

The momentum gained from the final seconds of play in the first half carried over to the second as York hit four straight shots on their first four trips down the court to go up by 20 points. From this point on the Green and White simply put their offense on cruise control and let their defensive prowess shine as they forced the Bobcats into taking off-balance and low-percentage shots, leading by as much as 27 during the second half.

With 12 minutes remaining in the game, York began to set up in the victory formation of basketball and milk the clock while in their offensive zone. The Green and White continued with the great ball movement that was showcased throughout the night and continually found the open Spartan, eventually pulling away by 25 points and securing the victory.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 50.9% (28-for-55) from the field, 33.3% from three (2-for-6) and 60.5% (23-for-38) from the foul line, connecting on eight more shots than the Bobcats who shot only 36.4% from the floor.

The Spartans return to action on Monday, December 13, as they host visiting Rowan at 6:00 pm in York's final contest of the first semester. The Green and White will then head down to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the Land of Magic Classic as they will take on Western Connecticut State Dec. 28 before facing Denison on Dec. 29.
