GRANTHAM, PA – The York College women’s basketball team welcomed back junior captain Jaimie Sapp (Bluemont, Va./Loudon Valley) as the forward helped lead the Green and White to a 63-54 victory over a talented McDaniel College squad on Friday evening in the opening round of the Messiah College/Wingate Hotel Invitational. Sapp had missed the first two contests due to injury and just returned to practice earlier in the week.
The Spartans improve to 2-1 overall while the Green Terror open their season 0-1.
York fell behind 4-0 early but scored the next six points. The Green Terror tied the game at six but the Spartans went on a 15-3 run to take a 21-9 lead with 7:40 remaining in the half. The Green Terror answered with a 10-0 spurt that covered 4:02 as they drew to within two at 21-19. York scored four of the final six points of the half to take a 25-21 lead to the break.
The Green and White opened the second stanza with a 7-0 burst to drive the lead to 11 at 32-21 just three minutes into the half. McDaniel scored eight straight points, trimming the lead to three. York worked the lead back to double figures at the 10:28 mark on a Sapp jumper. York pushed the lead to a game-high 14 at 52-38 with 7:23 remaining. The Green Terror again chipped away at the York lead, getting to within nine points on an Ashley Lyles bucket with 5:44 showing on the clock.
York kept the lead in double digits most of the rest of the contest before the Green Terror ended with a three pointer with 11 seconds remaining in the game to provide for the final of Spartan margin of victory.
Sapp was great in her return as she poured in a team-high 16 points on an efficient 8-of-12 shooting from the floor. She also had five rebounds in the win. Junior April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Sparkman added four assists and two blocked shots in her 36 minutes of work. Senior Jamie Polan (York, Pa./West York) was the third Spartan in double figures with 12 points while she added a career-high eight rebounds, six assists and three steals in her best game of the season. Gayle Exley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was very good with eight points and nine rebounds in her 28 minutes of action.
Ali Moreland led the Green Terror with 19 points, as she was the lone McDaniel player to reach double figures. Moreland was 7-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. She also had six rebounds and four steals. Whitney Snoops led the Green Terror on the glass as she pulled in 12 rebounds. However, Snoops struggled from the floor, as she was 1-for-8 and 1-for-2 from the line for three points.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 40% from the floor while they held the Green Terror to just 29.3% shooting. The Green Terror attempted 15 more shots than the Spartans but York held a commanding 55-40 edge in rebounding. The Spartans did commit 24 turnovers that McDaniel turned into 20 points.
The Spartans get back to action on Saturday
afternoon at 1:00 pm when they face Washington College (Md.) in the
second round of the Classic tournament.
