YORK, PA – The York College women’s basketball squad opened their 2009-10 campaign with a 60-41 non-conference victory over Goucher College on Sunday afternoon in York. The Spartans improve to 1-0 with the win while the Gophers fall to 0-1. The Spartans have now won nine straight over the Gophers in the series.
The Spartans opened up a five point lead early on only to have the Gophers tie the game and eventually take a two point lead at 14-12 on an Allie Russo jumper with 11:18 remaining in the first half.
The Spartans responded quickly as freshman guard Cinthia Ruiz (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) provided a quick spark off the bench with back-to-back threes that lifted the York lead to 18-14. Those triples gave the Spartans a lead that would be challenged, but not relinquished, for the rest of the game. The Gophers trimmed York’s advantage to one at 22-21 with 6:35 left but the Spartans scored nine of the final 11 points of the stanza to take a 31-23 lead to the break.
The second half was sluggish early on as neither team was able to get on track. The Gophers cut York’s lead to five at 36-31 but the Green and White went on a 7-0 spurt to push the lead to 12 at 43-31. York’s lead would not fall below double figures the rest of the game. The Spartans final 19-point margin of victory would be their high-water mark in the game as April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) drained a pair of free throws with 1:12 left to provide for the final margin.
Sparkman led the Spartan effort with 15 hard-earned points. The junior added three rebounds, four assists, a blocked shot and a steal in her 34 minutes of action. Freshman Jess Kramer (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) recorded a double-double in her first collegiate game with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Ruiz was the third Spartan in double figures with 11 points while she also had four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Another Spartan newcomer, sophomore guard Khadija Mitchell (Bel Air, Md./Mercy), added eight points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
Amber Smith led the Gophers with a double-double as she notched 11 points and 10 rebounds. Victoria Mitchell added 10 points and eight rebounds while Kelsey Myette had seven points and three boards.
Neither team lit it up from the floor as York shot 32.8% from the field while the Gophers made just 28.6% of their attempts from the floor. The Spartans were good from three as they canned seven triples for the day while Goucher was 0-for-7 from distance. York made 9-of-12 from the charity stripe while Goucher was 9-for-14.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday
evening when they travel to Rowan University for a 6:00 pm
