YORK, PA – The York College women’s basketball losing skid reached five as the McDaniel College Green Terror handed the Spartans a 81-56 non-conference loss at Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
The Green Terror remained red hot as they have won 13 straight. They improve to 13-4 overall with the win. The Spartans fall to 7-11 for the campaign with the loss.
McDaniel dominated the game from the start as they jumped out to an early 8-2 lead five minutes into the game. The Spartans got the next two points on a pair of Jamie Polan (York, Pa./West York) free throws with 14:46 left. Unfortunately for York, the Green Terror then blitzed the Spartans with a game-ending 21-1 run that pushed the lead to 29-5 with 5:45 left in the half. The Green Terror settled for the 23-point half time lead as the contest was essentially decided.
The Spartans cut the lead to 19 early in the second half but the Green Terror kept the lead in the 20’s most of the half with the exception of a quick spurt that pushed the advantage into the 30’s for a brief two minute stretch late in the game.
The McDaniel win snaps the Spartans’ modest two-game win streak against the Green Terror while McDaniel has won 11 straight in the series when the game is held in York. The 25-point margin of victory is also the largest in the history of the series.
Kim Acton led a balanced Green Terror attack with a career-high 12 points while she also recorded a team-high eight rebounds. Whitney Snoops added 12 points and five rebounds while Cara Thompson notched 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals in a very complete 22-minute effort. Sally Grace came off the bench to tally 10 points for McDaniel.
For the second game in a row, sophomore Mandy Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) led the Spartans with a career-high as she notched 16 points in 18 minutes. She was 5-for-11 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three, and 4-for-5 from the stripe. She also had four rebounds and three steals. Polan was the other Spartan in double figures with 11 points while Gayle Exley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) led the Spartans on the glass with nine rebounds.
York shot just 22.2% in the first half but managed to shoot 35.1% for the game. McDaniel shot a crisp 50% for the contest including 54.8% in the second stanza. The Green Terror outrebounded York 41-32.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Hood College in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
