Wesley Downs Spartans as Losing Streak Reaches Four
DOVER, DEL – The York College women’s basketball team saw their losing streak reach four as the Spartans dropped a 79-61 Capital Athletic Conference decision to Wesley College on Saturday afternoon in Dover, Delaware. The Wolverines, winners of eight straight, improve to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in the league.
The first half was a nip and tuck affair early as the Wolverines jumped out to an early lead only to have the Spartans take a one-point lead on back-to-back threes from Dija Mitchell (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) and Jamie Polan (York, Pa./West York). The Wolverines would bounce back to kick the lead to eight before a Loreta Tonuzi (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) triple tied the game at 32 with 6:06 remaining in the half. The game was tied again at 36 before the Wolverines went on a 12-0 run to take a 48-36 lead. The Spartans scored the final five points of the half as they took a seven-point deficit to the half.
The second half began with Wesley putting their foot on the gas petal as they went on a 9-2 run to take a 57-43 lead less than six minutes into the half. The Spartans trimmed the lead to ten but Wesley quickly responded with a six-point burst that pushed the lead back to 16. The Spartans would not get any closer than 14 the rest of the contest as York went just 5-for-21 from the field in the half. The Wolverine lead grew to as many as 21 before Wesley settled for the 18-point victory.
The Wolverines were led by the three-headed attack of Jazmine Miller, Cory Boyd and Angie Owens. Miller led all scorers with 23 points while she also pulled in a game-high 11 rebounds. Miller was 10-for-16 from the floor while she also canned all three of her free throw attempts. Boyd poured in 20 points with six rebounds, six steals, and six assists in her 36 minutes of action. Owens recorded 19 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and three assists for the Wolverines.
Sophomore Mandy Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled) had a career game as she had 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor including one three and a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the stripe. She also had three steals in her career-high 22 minutes of work. Mitchell added nine points and three rebounds while Gayle Exley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) contributed eight points and seven rebounds for the Green and White.
The Spartans shot 50% in the first half but their 23.8% mark in the second half proved to be an anchor to their overall shooting percentage as York finished the game shooting 40% (22-for-55). The Wolverines shot 44.3% from the field for the game. Wesley banged home 9-of-30 from three while York went just 4-for-20 from downtown.
The Wolverines handled York on the glass as they held a 42-34 margin in rebounding which led to Wesley having a 20-10 advantage in second chance points. Wesley also had a 38-26 advantage in points in the paint.
Neither team did a very good job of taking care of the ball as York committed 23 miscues while the Wolverines had 21 turnovers in the win.
York returns to action on Tuesday night as
they host McDaniel College in their final non-conference contest of
the year. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 7:00 pm.
