Spartans Steamrolled by Saints
ARLINGTON, VA – The York College women’s basketball team saw their modest three game win streak against nationally ranked Marymount University come to a screeching halt as the #7 Saints steamrolled the Spartans 62-27 in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening at the Verizon Center in Arlington, VA. Marymount improves to 13-0 overall and 4-0 in the CAC while York drops their second straight, falling to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The offensive performance was the worst in the 13-year tenure of Spartan head coach Betsy Witman. The Spartans previous lowest point total came on February 23, 2006 when the Green and White was held to 40 points by the University of Mary Washington. The final 35-point margin of defeat was also the largest in Witman’s tenure.
The first half was a nightmare of epic proportions as York managed to score just six points in the opening 20 minutes. York fell behind 15-0 and didn’t have their first field goal until April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) hit a lay up with 6:43 remaining before the half. By the time Sparkman hit the bucket, the Green and White trailed 26-4. The Saints would eventually take a 33-6 lead to the half.
The second half would be more competitive but the damage had long been done as the Saints outscored York 29-21 in the second 20 minutes.
Marymount had 12 players reach the scoring column led by Meredith Levison as she notched nine points in 15 minutes of work. Kathleen Brown and Shannon Gough each contributed eight points to the Saint attack. Maame Amponsah pulled in six of the Saints’ 43 team rebounds in the game.
Sparkman led York with nine points, as she was 4-for-8 from the floor while she also pulled in five rebounds to pace the Spartans. Senior Jamie Polan (York, Pa./West York) added six points, two steals and two rebounds in her 23 minutes of play.
The Spartans committed 31 turnovers in the loss and the Saints turned those mistakes into 31 points. Marymount outrebounded the Green and White 43-28 and had 24 offensive rebounds, which they converted into 16 second-chance points.
Marymount shot 34.4% from the floor for the game while the Spartans converted just 26.3% from the field including 9.5% (2-for-21) in the first half. The Saints were 6-for-24 (25%) from three while they went a solid 14-for-19 (73.7%) from the stripe. York made just 1-of-11 from three while they converted six of their eight attempts from the charity stripe.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Hood College to face the Blazers in a CAC contest at Ft. Detrick in Frederick, MD. There are special requirements for entrance into the base. Please reference the York College web for detailed information. Tip time is set for 4:00 pm.
