YORK, PA-York College sophomore guard
April Sparkman has earned a spot on the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II
women’s basketball squad as announced by CoSIDA on
Thursday morning. Sparkman, a sophomore undeclared major from
Walkersville, Md and Walkersville High School, earned third-team
honors in her first year of eligibility for the award.
Sparkman has been outstanding in her second year
in the green and white. She is averaging 15.3 points, 5.7 rebounds,
and 2.6 assists per game. Sparkman is shooting 51.1% from the
floor, 43.5% from three and 83.7% from the charity stripe. She also
has 17 blocked shots and 15 steals in her 20 games.
Sparkman, who owns a GPA of 3.89, has
blossomed in her second season. She was the MVP of the Mike
Durgala Tournament at Johns Hopkins in mid-November and also
earned All-Tournament team honors in the Spartans’
Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in early January.
Spartan head coach Betsy Witman
is thrilled to see Sparkman recognized for her academic
prowess.
“April is the model
student-athlete,” says Witman. “Her hard work on
the court and in the classroom has paid off in so many ways. In
less than two years, April has already become one of the premier
players in the Capital Athletic Conference and the Atlantic
Region. I am proud and pleased to have her as a member of the
women’s basketball program at York College.”
Sparkman's name is all over the current Capital
Athletic Conference leaders. She is first in three point
field goal percentage, fourth in scoring, fourth in field goal
percentage, second in free throw percentage, ninth in three point
field goals made, tenth in blocked shots, 11th in assists, and 18th
in rebounding.
The Spartans are currently ranked 12th in the
country in both the d3hoops.com Top 25 and the
WBCA USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. York has won a
school-record 19 straight as they have not lost since opening day
to nationally ranked Messiah. The Spartans’ 19 wins ties
their school record for victories in a season which they
established last year.
York returns to action on Saturday, February 7
when they travel to CAC foe St. Mary’s for a 2:00 pm
contest.
