Huge First Half Propels Spartans to 14th Straight Win

YORK, PA-The York College women’s basketball team used a 51-point first half to cruise past Wesley College, 89-59, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Monday night in York. The Spartans, who jumped up to #17 in the most recent d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, improve to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the CAC. The victory increases the Spartans’ school record win streak to 14. Wesley falls to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the league.
The Spartans jumped on the Wolverines early and often as they sprinted out to a 12-2 lead just under four minutes into the game. The run was powered by the three-point jump shot, something that would be a theme throughout the first half. Three’s from seniors Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) and Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston) allowed the Spartans to assume control of the game early. York continued to push the lead higher as they had a 31-8 margin just over 12 minutes into the half. The Spartans lead ballooned to as many as 29 twice in the first half before the Wolverines used a late 12-6 run to trim their halftime deficit to 23 at 51-28.
The Spartans were on fire from distance in the first half, converting 9-of-16 from three. The Spartans shot 48.7% from the floor in the half while the defense limited the Wolverines to 29.7% shooting in the stanza.
The Wolverines came out of the intermission looking to cut into the Spartan lead. The guests cut the lead inside 20 at 58-39 but York responded with an emphatic 9-0 spurt to push the lead back to 28 at 67-39. The Spartans built the lead to as many as 38 on three different occasions before settling for the 30-point win.
York was paced by the duo of Ward and sophomore April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville). Ward poured in a game-high 24 points while she recorded her 20th career double-double with her 10 rebounds. She was 9-for-13 from the floor, 5-for-7 from three, and 1-for-1 at the line. Ward also dished out five assists, collected four steals and had a pair of blocked shots. Sparkman added 23 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocked shots as she continues to play great basketball for the Spartans. The sophomore standout was 9-for-13 from the floor with two threes and a 3-for-4 performance at the free throw line. Andrews chipped in with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals in her 29 minutes of work.
Angie Owens paced the Wolverines with a strong effort as she notched a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. She had achieved the double-double at the half with 10 points and 10 caroms. Owens was 8-for-17 from the floor in 36 minutes of action. Cory Boyd was the other Wolverine in double figures with 13 points while she also had nine rebounds, and three assists. Colleen Thomas, the reigning CAC Player of the Week, was held in check by the Spartan defense as she had nine points on 4-of-14 shooting including 1-of-9 from three.
York finished the game shooting a solid 43.4% from the field while they made 13-of-29 from three, good for a 44.8% accuracy mark. The Green and White converted 10-of-13 from the free throw line (76.9%).
Wesley ended the game shooting 34.2% from the floor, 17.2% (5-for-29) from three, and 6-for-9 from the free throw line.
York did a fantastic job of taking care of the ball as they committed just 11 turnovers while they handed out 23 assists in the game. The Spartans forced 17 Wesley turnovers and converted those into 19 points.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to a busy Washington, DC to face Gallaudet in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Tip time at the GU Fieldhouse is set for 6:00 pm.
