Ward's 31 Points Leads Spartans Past Winless Gulls
SALISBURY, MD-Senior guard Keli Ward
(Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) tallied a season-high 31 points
as the Spartans rolled past a winless Salisbury University Sea Gull
squad, 85-49, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Tuesday
night in Salisbury, MD. The Spartans, winners of eight straight,
improve to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference while the Gulls
fall to 0-9 overall and 0-2 in the league.
The Spartans dominated the game from the begining as they scored the first nine points of the contest. After Salisbury cut the lead to four, Ward ripped off a personal 8-0 run as she sandwiched a pair of threes around a lay up to push the York lead to 17-5. The Spartans continued the run by scoring 12 of the next 14 points to push the lead to 22 at 29-7 with 6:48 remaining in the half. Salisbury cut the lead to 17 twice over the next three minutes but York finished the first half on a 12-2 run to take a 43-16 lead to the break.
Salisbury began the the second half with a basket but York then went on another 12-2 spurt to push the lead to 35 at 55-20. York’s lead did not fall below 29 points the rest of the way as they cruised to the win.
Ward led the Spartans as she was a blistering 13-for-16 from the floor including 3-for-3 from three and 2-for-2 from the line. She recorded her 18th career double-double with her game-high 14 rebounds while she also had five assists, four steals and a blocked shot in 33 minutes of action. Fellow senior captain Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston) was the other Spartan in double figures as she tallied 12 points with four assists, two rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocked shots. Senior Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) added nine points, four rebounds, and two assists while sophomore April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) chipped in with eight points, three rebounds and an assist. All 12 Spartans who played in the game, scored at least two points.
Salisbury was paced by the duo of Glen Charlton and Kylie Hall as they each had 10 points. Charlton was 5-for-11 from the cloor while she also had five assists and five rebunds. Hall was 4-for-8 with five boards and a steal.
York shot a crisp 53.1% from the floor including a solid 7-for-14 showing from three point land. The Green and White also converted 10-of-14 from the free throw line. The Spartans held Salisbury to 38.5% shooting while the Gulls went just 1-for-2 from three. The Sea Gulls struggled from the free throw line, converting just 8-for-15 from the stripe.
The Spartans finished the game with a 41-27 edge on the glass while York also had a 38-16 margin in points in the paint. York turned Salisbury’s 26 turnovers into 34 points while the hosts got just 11 points off of 21 Spartan mistakes.
The win snaps a three-game Spartan losing streak at Salisbury while it is also York’s fifth straight 30-plus point victory.
York is now off until January 3 when they host Buffalo State in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Saturday, January 3. Tip time at Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 4:00 pm.
