TOWSON, MD-The York College women's basketball squad continued their hot start to the 2008-09 season with a convincing 76-43 non-conference win at Goucher College on Tuesday night in Towson, MD. The Green and White has now won four straight after opening their season with a six point loss to nationally ranked Messiah. The Gophers fall to 2-2 for the campaign.
The Goucher jumped on the Spartans early as York was playing their third game in four days. The Gopher lead stood at a maximum of four points three different times before the Spartans tied the game at 16. York then seized a lead courtesy of an April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) jumper with 9:29 remaining in the half. The Spartan lead vacillated between two and four points over the next four minutes before York outscored the Gophers 12-0 over the final 5:55 of the half to take a 38-25 lead to the break.
The beginning of the second half saw the Spartans build on the first half ending run as they outscored Goucher 10-3 over the first five minutes of the second stanza. The two runs combined to be a 22-3 spurt that turned a one point Spartan lead into a 48-28 bulge.
The Gophers trimmed the Spartan lead to 16 twice before the Green and White put the game away for good with a 13-2 run that increased the York lead to 65-38 with 7:07 remaining in regulation. York closed out the game with the reserves pushing the lead to as high as 35 before settling for the final margin.
The Spartans were led by senior Amy Fry (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) as she poured in a career-high 16 points. Fry was 7-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. She also pulled in eight rebounds and notched three steals. Sophomore Jaimie Sapp (Bluemont, Va./Loudon Valley) also registered a career-high with 12 points while she tied her career-high with eight rebounds in her best game of the year. Sapp was 6-for-9 from the floor in her 19 minutes of action. The reigning CAC Player-of-the-Week, senior Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford), had 10 points, eight assists, four rebounds, and five steals in the win. She was 5-for-8 from the field and did not attempt a free throw as she played just 28 minutes in the win. Senior Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) was the fourth Spartan in double figures as she had 10 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.
Amber Smith led the Gophers as she notched 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. The Spartans harassed Smith into a 5-for-18 performance from the floor while she did go 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Elizabeth Von Ende was the other Gopher in double figures with 10 points as she was 4-for-14 from the field. Kelsey Myette matched Smith for team-high in rebounding as she also pulled in seven caroms.
The Spartans shot 53.1% from the field for the game but went a chilly 1-for-8 from three. York did convert seven of their nine attempts from the free throw line. Goucher finished the game shooting just 25.8% from the floor and actually shot a higher percentage (27.8%) from three as they mad 5-for-18 from distance. Goucher was 4-for-6 from the free throw line.
The Green and White handled the Gophers on the glass as they held a 52-30 margin on the boards. The Spartans also held a sizable 40-14 edge in points in the paint while York's bench outscored Goucher's reserves 33-6.
York returns to action on Sunday afternoon as they host Rutgers-Camden in a non-conference contest. Game time at Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 2:00 pm.
