Ward's Double-Double Leads Spartans to 15th Straight Win
WASHINGTON, D.C.-The nationally ranked York College women’s basketball squad shook off a slow start to post a 82-41 victory over Gallaudet University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening in Washington, DC. The Spartans, who are ranked 17th in the d3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and 21st in the WBCA USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, improve to 15-1 overall and remain atop the CAC with a mark of 8-0. The Spartans’ extend their school record win streak to 15 with the victory over the Bison who fall to 4-11 and 0-8 in the league.
The Spartans were very sluggish in the opening five minutes of the game as York trailed 6-4, 4:35 into the game. The Spartans then fashioned a sustained 26-3 run that gave the Green and White a 30-9 lead with 6:36 remaining in the half. The Spartans eventually pushed the lead to 25 on an April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) layup with eight second left in the half.
York shot 50% in the first half while the Spartan defense held the Bison to 23.5% shooting in the opening 20 minutes of action.
The start of the second half saw the Spartans extend the lead to 34 points courtesy of an 11-2 run that covered the first 3:18 of the stanza. The Bison managed to cut the Spartan lead down to 28 before York hit the Bison with a quick 11-2 run to extend the lead back 37 at 66-29. The Spartan lead would not fall below 33 the rest of the way and the lead grew to 45 before the Spartans settled for a 41-point win.
Senior point guard Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) tallied her 21st career double-double with 16 points and 10 assists. Ward, who is third in the nation in assists, was 7-for-12 from the field and 2-for-5 from three while she had two steals and three rebounds. Ward committed just one turnover in 32 minutes of action. Senior Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) and sophomore Jaimie Sapp (Bluemont, Va./Loundon Valley) each contributed 14 points. Sapp was 7-for-9 from the floor as she also pulled in seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Perez added two boards, two steals, and a blocked shot. Senior Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Sparkman rounded out the Spartans’ double figure scorers as they each had 11 points. Andres had four assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Sparkman added five boards, two assists, a blocked shot and a steal.
Nukeitra Hayes led the Bison with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Amanda Krieger chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 48.6% from the floor, a cool 26.7% from three, and a solid 10-for-12 from the charity stripe. Gallaudet shot 27.1% from the field, 22.2% from beyond the arc and 76.5% (13-for-17) from the free throw line.
The Spartans out-rebounded the Bison 42-34 while they held an 11-7 edge in second chance points. York outscored Gallaudet 44-12 in points in the paint. The Spartans forced 24 Bison turnovers which they converted into 31 points.
York returns to action on Saturday afternoon as they face a nationally ranked Marymount University Saint squad. Tip time in Arlington, VA is set for 2:00 pm.
