Keli Ward Named Spartan Athlete of the Week
YORK, PA-York College is proud to announce that junior women’s basketball player Keli Ward has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for the week of January 14-20, 2008.
Ward, a junior guard from Nottingham, PA and Oxford High School, led the Spartans to a trio of wins for the week including a pair of Capital Athletic Conference victories.
The Spartans began the week with a 76-57 non-conference win over Alvernia College. Ward tossed in a team-high 21 points while she also pulled in eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Ward was 9-for-14 from the floor including 3-for-5 from three.
York then took to the road where they posted a 65-47 win over Wesley. Ward notched 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists. She was 5-for-11 from the floor including a trio of treys for the green and white.
The Spartans concluded their successful week with a 90-49 win over Gallaudet. In a season-low 23 minutes, Ward tallied 18 points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out six assists. Ward was 7-for-10 from the floor, 3-for-6 from three, and 1-for-1 from the free throw line.
For the week, Ward averaged 17.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game. She shot 60% (21-for-35) from the floor, 50% (9-for-18) from three and a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
Spartan head coach Betsy Witman is pleased with the play of her junior point guard.
“Keli has continued to get better each and every game,” says Witman. “Early in the year she was coming off an injury that really hampered her on the floor. As she continues to get healthy, her play gets better and better. Keli is certainly a key to our success.”
The Spartans have won seven straight and take on Marymount University in a key CAC contest on Wednesday.
For the season, Ward is averaging 12.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.13 assists per game for the green and white. Ward is shooting 44% from the floor, 35.8% from three and a team-best 85% from the free throw line. She is approaching 1,000 career points as she needs 143 to reach the milestone. For her career, Ward has handed out 363 assists, 32 short of tying Heather Kessler’s school record.
Ward is a nursing major and is the daughter of Marc and Sherri Ward.
