Spartans Top Gallaudet in CAC Action

YORK, PA - The York College women's basketball team won its second consecutive Capital Athletic Conference game with a 90-49 victory over Gallaudet Saturday evening at York’s Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.  All 13 active Spartans tallied in the game as the green and white won their seventh straight overall.  York boosts their season mark to 13-3 including 5-2 in league play, while the Bison drop to 1-12 and 0-8 in the CAC.

York never trailed their guests as Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) dropped in the game’s first two points 55 seconds into the contest.  Running out to an early 7-0 lead, the Spartans extended their advantage to 14-6 behind a Gayle Exley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) lay-up with 14:34 remaining in the half.

Back-to-back Bison scores from Nukeitra Hayes and Vanessa Arp cut the Spartan lead to four at 14-10 with just under 13 minutes to go in the frame.  The Spartans would then stretch their lead to eleven before Gallaudet’s Hayes went on a 7-2 run of her own.  Two lay-ups and three made free throws from Hayes decreased the Spartan advantage to 23-17 with 7:26 remaining in the period.

York would quickly shut the door on any thoughts Gallaudet had of a comeback.  The Spartans have made a habit of going on extended runs to close the first half and tonight was no different.  Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston) canned a fast break lay-up at the 6:50 mark and the Spartans were off and running.  York’s lead would balloon to as much as 26 at 49-23 before taking a 49-25 halftime lead.  During the 26-8 run, Spartan freshmen forwards Exley and Caitlin Byrne (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) combined for eleven points off the Spartan bench.

The first stanza saw York hit a solid 45% from the field on 18-for-40 shooting including 7-for-18 from distance.  Gallaudet did not fair as well, shooting 10-for-29 from the floor and handing the Spartans 14 turnovers.

The second half was much the same story as the green and white steadily increased their overwhelming advantage throughout the latter 20 minutes.  An Amy Fry (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) lay-in put the Spartans up 30 with 16:28 to go and the lead would never dip below this threshold for the rest of the contest.  Ten minutes later, the York bulge would increase to 40 after Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) tallied her final two points of the game.  The Spartans would then cruise to the 90-49 CAC victory.

Junior guard Andrews paced the Spartans with 20 points in 27 minutes of work.  This marks her second-straight 20-point effort after a 22-point performance last Wednesday in the Spartans’ 65-47 win over Wesley.  Andrews also added five rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal.  Junior point guard Ward cashed-in 18 points, dished-out six assists, pulled-down five boards, and ripped a pair of steals in 23 minutes of work.  Freshman guard April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) was the third Spartan in double-figures with ten on the night including six from deep.  Exley had the best scoring game of her young Spartan career, tallying nine points in 17 quality minutes.

Hayes and Brittainy Payne performed admirably for the Bison.  Hayes, a talented freshman forward, led Gallaudet with 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting and 4-for-6 from the charity stripe.  She also registered six rebounds, two steals, one block, and one assist in her 29 minutes.  Payne recorded a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds to go along with four assists and one block.

York attempted a season-high 81 shots converting 33 of those tries for 40.7% from the field.  The Spartans also nailed a season-best ten treys after previously notching nine triples against Wesley.  From the free-throw line, York canned 14-of-19 for 73.7%.  Defensively, the Spartans snatched double-digit steals for the tenth time this season, ripping ten from the Bison.

The visitors shot 35.6% from the field but were only able to take 59 shots over the 40 minutes.  Turnovers plagued Gallaudet all night as the Bison gave the ball away 26 times.

York returns to the court Wednesday evening, January 23, in a pivotal conference match-up with the 13-2 (6-1 CAC) Saints from Marymount University.  Tip from the Grumbacher Center is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
