Defense, Timely Offense Keeps Spartans Unbeaten
YORK, PA- The York College women’s basketball team remained unbeaten with a strong defensive effort as they posted 74-50 victory over previously unbeaten Lycoming College on Monday night at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center in York. The Spartans improve to 4-0 overall while the Warriors fall to 3-1 for the campaign.
The game began with an offensive flurry from both teams. The squads combined to score 19 points in the first four minutes as York led 11-8. The Warriors would claim their only lead of the game with a pair of layups from Andrea Cooper and Rebecca Leid as Lycoming led 12-11 with 14:57 remaining in the half. York recaptured the lead with a quick 7-0 spurt and would not reliquish that advantage the remainder of the evening. York’s lead wavered between three and eight points before Lycoming trimmed the Spartan advantage to one at 25-24 with 5:48 left. The green white proceeded to fire off a 9-0 run that pushed the lead to 10 at 34-24 with just over two minutes remaining in the half. York took a 38-29 lead to the break.
York clamped down on defense to start the second half as they held Lycoming to just five points over the first 11:20 of the stanza. While the Spartan defense was working, the offense was also clicking as the green and white scored 21 points to take a 59-34 lead with 9:32 remaining in the game. The York lead ballooned to as many as 32 before the green and white settled for the 24 point win.
Senior Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) led the balanced York attack with 20 points while she also had four rebounds and four assists. Junior Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston) continued her strong start to 2007-08 with her first career double-double as she had 11 points and a game-high and career-high 10 rebounds. Andrews also had a pair of assists and two steals for YCP. Freshman April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) was the third Spartan in double figures with 12 points in addition to six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots in 29 minutes of action. Fellow frosh Jaimie Sapp (Bluemont, Va./Loundon Valley) came off the bench to record a career-high eight points in just 11 minutes of work. Sapp was 4-for-5 from the floor while she also had a blocked shot and a steal. Junior Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) handed out nine assists while she had just one turnover in 28 minutes. Ward also had five rebounds, a steal and three points in the win.
Samantha Ruby was the only Warrior in double figures as she had 12 points as she was 3-for-5 from three and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Leid chipped in with eight rebounds, five points, and a pair of assists. Kaitlyn Ober and Cooper each had eight points for the Warriors.
The Spartan defense held the Warriors to 31.1% shooting from the floor for the game including a suffocating 22.2% in the second half. Lycoming finished the game shooting 21.1% from three and 57.1% from the free throw line. York shot 49.2% from the floor and 50% (5-for-10) from distance for the game. The Spartans struggled from the charity stripe, converting just 7-of-13 (53.8%) for the night. The Spartans held a 46-36 edge in rebounds for the game.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they open their conference slate with a home game against Hood. Tip time from Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
