YORK, PA - The York College women’s basketball team stretched their early season win streak to three with a convincing 86-56 victory over visiting Goucher College. The Spartans improve to 3-0 while the Gophers fall to 1-2.
As with their previous two games, York got off to a fast start jumping out to an early 12-5 lead. A 15-foot jumper from junior forward Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) and a driving lay-up by All-CAC guard Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) increased the Spartan lead to 16-5 and forced Goucher to call their first timeout with 11:58 to go in the half. There would be no looking back for the Spartans on this night.
The York defense swarmed the Gophers not allowing any free looks at the rim. The Spartans forced Goucher into numerous difficult and contested shots that the visitors were simply unable to convert. York continued to extend their lead throughout the half increasing their advantage to 36-7 on a Gina Casadei (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) jumper with 4:41 left in the opening stanza. The Spartans’ intense defensive effort did not allow Goucher into double-digits until Shadae Swan canned her team’s tenth point with 3:47 to go in the half.
York went into the break up 43-17. The Spartans shot a blistering 56.3% from the floor only to be outdone by their defense, which forced Goucher into shooting 17.2% from the floor making only five of 29 field goals.
The second frame went much like the first as the green and white steadily increased their lead. Up by as much as 40 points in the second half, the Spartans continued to play solid all-around basketball. York passed, rebounded and shot well all while playing hard-nosed defense. With the game secure, head coach Betsy Witman was able to go deep into her bench providing players with valuable court time. In the end, York cruised to the 86-56 victory.
Perez led the Spartan offense with 14 points on six of nine shooting. Forward Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) continued her magnificent senior campaign pouring in 13 points and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Ward notched 13 points of her own while dishing out seven assists. The junior point guard took great care of the ball only committing a pair of turnovers in 30 minutes of action.
Swan had a terrific game for the Gophers registering 22 points on the evening. Amber Smith recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Spartans return to action on Monday, November 26 when they host Lycoming at 7:00 pm.
