Spartans Open Season with 20-Point Win Over Ferrum

GUILFORD, NC - The York College women’s basketball team opened their season in fine fashion Friday evening defeating Ferrum College 82-62 in the Guilford College Classic.  The solid win starts the Spartans off on the right foot as they begin the year 1-0.  Ferrum is dealt the loss and open the 2007-08 campaign 0-1.

Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored York’s first basket of the season when she hit a jumper only four seconds after tip-off.  York proceeded to go on a 9-2 opening run forcing Ferrum to take their first timeout only 1:21 into the game.  The Spartans never looked back.  

Dominating the first half, the green and white pushed their lead to as much as 25 points before the buzzer blew for half time.  The first frame saw York shoot a blistering 59.5% from the floor en route to scoring 53 points.  The Panthers only managed to put 31 on the board in the first 20 minutes shooting just over 38%.  

Taking their foot off the gas in the second stanza, the Spartans were able to give minutes to reserve players, as experience gained now will prove valuable later in the season.  Ferrum continued to battle and tallied 31 points in the second half while York registered 29.  

For the game, the Spartans shot 45.3% from the field while the Panthers hit 36.9% of their attempts.  York controlled the glass, grabbing 52 rebounds as Ferrum recorded 41 boards.    

Senior forward Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) began her final season in the green and white with a double-double registering 19 points and 14 rebounds in 34 minutes.  On the evening, all five Spartan starters poured in double figures in scoring including junior guard Andrews who recorded 14 points and chipped in four assists.  Freshman April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) earned the start in her first collegiate game and came away with eleven points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

Alexandria Davenport’s 15 points and 12 rebounds paced the Panthers. Miranda Carrasco matched Davenport’s 15 points as she also handed-out a pair of assists.

York takes on Averett College Saturday at 2:00 pm in their second game of the Guilford College Classic.
