Spartans Survive at Villa Julie as York Improves to 6-0

STEVENSON, MD-The York College women’s basketball team was caught looking ahead to Wednesday’s battle with number one Mary Washington as they played a sluggish contest, scraping by a pesky Villa Julie Mustang squad, 57-40, on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference play in Stevenson, MD. The Spartans improve to 6-0 and 2-0 in the conference while the Mustangs fall to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.

The Spartans seized control of the game early as they had a lead of 10, 15-5, midway through the first half. The Spartan lead grew to as many as 11 in the first half but York struggled from the floor in the stanza, hitting just 6-of-25 of their first half shots. The Mustangs, after trailing 17-6, held the Spartans to just eight points over the final 9:09 of the half. Villa Julie trimmed their deficit to five at the break as York went to the intermission up 25-20.

The green and white came out of the locker room and asserted themselves with a half-opening 10-0 run, pushing the lead to 35-20. The Mustangs trimmed the Spartan lead to nine on a Tanisha Foster jumper with 9:50 left in the game. Freshman April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) drained a triple to push the Spartan lead back into double figures where it would remain the rest of the way.

The Spartans were led by senior standout Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) as she tallied 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. Daly also had three steals and a blocked shot in 19 minutes of action. Sparkman continues to be a key first-year player for the green and white as she notched her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Sparkman has pulled down 21 rebounds in her last two games. Junior Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) was the third Spartan in double figures with 12 points while she also had six rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Junior Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) added nine points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals in 35 minutes of work. Ward scored seven of her points at the free throw line as she was 7-for-8 for the game.

Kristen Steiner paced the Mustangs as she recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Steiner was 3-for-5 from the floor and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Tara Galvin was the other Mustang in double figures as she tallied 11 points. Foster added seven points and eight rebounds for the Mustangs.

The Spartans registered a season-low 21.9% (16-for-55) effort from the floor. York was just 2-for-9 from three (22.2%) while they put together a very solid 74.2% (23-for-31) mark from the free throw line. The Spartans, who entered the game with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio, made 20 miscues while they had just nine helpers for the game.

The Mustangs shot an equally chilly 25% (11-for-44) from the floor while they made 3-of-10 from three. Villa Julie converted 15-of-20 from the free throw line, good for a 75% accuracy mark.

The Spartans finished the game with a 41-35 edge on the glass, tying their closest rebounding margin of the year.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they host the top-ranked Eagles from Mary Washington. Tip time from Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
