#4 Eagles Drill Spartans in CAC Action Saturday
FREDERICKSBURG, VA-The York College women’s basketball team suffered a humbling 92-64 loss at #4 Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 18-1 overall and a perfect 11-0 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 15-5 overall and 7-4 in the league. The Spartans have been competitive against everyone on their schedule with the exception of the Eagles as Mary Washington has outscored York by a combined 48 points in two contests this year.
The game actually began on a positive note for York as they led 5-2 before the Eagles tied the game at seven just 2:08 into the game. That would prove to be the highlight for the Spartans as Mary Washington methodically built the lead to 11 at 25-14 with 10:24 remaining in the half. The Spartans got a jumper and a three point play from Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) to draw to within six with 9:40 left. Unfortunately for York, the three point play seemed to wake the Eagles up as UMW ripped off a 16-2 run to take a 41-21 lead with 3:13 remaining in the opening half. The two teams each scored five points in the remainder of the stanza as the Eagles took a 46-26 lead at the break.
The second half wasn’t much better for the Spartans as Mary Washington needed just 2:35 into the second 20 minutes to open up a 28 point bulge thanks to a 12-4 run to open the stanza. The Eagles controlled the pace of the game the rest of the way. York was able to trim the lead to 22 on a Jamie Polan (York, Pa./West York) triple with 6:43 left but UMW scored nine of the next 11 points of the game to increase the lead back to 29. The lead grew to as many as 31 before the hosts settled for the 28-point blowout win.
The Eagles placed all five starters in double figures led by the duo of Ashton Mitchell and Liz Hickey. The twin towers both tallied 19 points in the win. Mitchell was 8-for-15 from the floor while she also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and handed out three assists. Hickey was a very efficient 7-for-8 from the field while she converted five of eight from the free throw line. Hickey pulled down five rebounds and notched three blocked shots. Lisa Tracy added 14 points and five rebounds while Amanda Bates contributed 11 points, five assists, and three rebounds. Leigh Kampman chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds and a trio of assists.
Junior point guard Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) led the green and white with 20 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. Ward was 8-for-15 from the floor including 2-for-4 from three. She also converted 2-of-3 from the free throw line. Perez chipped in with 11 points and three assists while senior Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) was the third Spartan in double figures with 10 points.
The Eagles shot 50.8% from the floor and went to the line 25 times, converting 19 of the chances for a 76% conversion percentage. York shot just 41.5% from the floor but went to the line just six times, making three.
Mary Washington handled York on the boards 43-33as the Eagles outscored York 30-22 in the paint. Mary Washington also held an 11-6 edge in second chance points. York’s 18 turnovers turned into 20 UMW points while the Spartans got 10 points on 10 Eagle miscues.
The Spartans will look to get back on track on Wednesday night as they host Salisbury University at 6:00 pm. The game kicks off a three-game home stand for the Spartans.
