Spartan Streak Reaches Three as Rowan Downs York, 78-72
GLASSBORO, NJ-The York College women’s basketball team suffered their third straight loss as the green and white closed out their 2007 fall semester portion of the schedule with a 78-72 loss at Rowan University on Tuesday evening. The Spartans fall to 6-3 with the loss while the Profs improve to 5-3 for the campaign.
The story was the second half as the Profs dominated the second 20 minutes of play. The Spartans scored four of the first six points of the stanza to lead 43-38 just 1:35 into the half. The Profs then fashioned 13-0 run that turned that deficit into a 51-43 lead with 13:27 remaining in the game. York trimmed the lead to four twice in the next two minutes only to have Jillian Kane drill a three that kick started an 8-2 spurt that put the Profs up by 10, 64-54, with 7:50 left in the game. The Rowan lead stayed between six and ten points until late when Keli Ward (Nottingham,?Pa./Oxford) hit a three with seven seconds left to draw York to within four at 76-72. York was forced to foul and Ashley Cieplicki drained two free throws to ice the Rowan victory.
The Profs’ lived at the line over the final six minutes of the game as their last field goal of the game came on a Gina Catanzariti fast break lay up with 7:50 left. The Profs scored their final 14 of the game at the line as they were 14-of-19 over the final 5:46. For the game, the Profs held a decided advantage at the line as they went to the charity stripe 30 times compared to 18 trips for the green and white.
The first half was dramatically different for the Spartans as they played well. The Profs started the game with an 8-2 lead but the Spartans responded with a 16-2 run keyed by a trio of Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston) threes. The hosts cut the lead to one with 3:32 remaining in the half but the Spartans scored seven of the final ten points of the half to take a 39-36 lead to the break. Unfortunately, the green and white would be unable to hold the lead.
Kane led the four Profs in double figures as she tallied 15 points while she also had four rebounds and two steals. Brynn DeGroff added 12 points while Catanzariti chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 23 minutes of work. Cieplicki was the fourth Prof in double figures with 10 points while she also pulled in four rebounds. Kristina Wallace handed out 10 assists while she also had six points and four rebounds.
Ward led the Spartans with 15 points while she also recorded three assists, two rebounds, and a pair of steals. Junior Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) and freshman April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) each tallied 12 points. Sparkman pulled in eight rebounds, dished out a pair of assists and had two steals while Perez had six caroms and three steals. Andrews added 11 points and six boards while senior Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) led the Spartans on the glass with 11 rebounds. Daly also had nine points, four assists, and three steals before fouling out with 3:11 left in the game.
For the third straight game, the Spartans were handled on the glass. This time the deficit was seven as Rowan’s advantage was 44-37. Both teams finished with 19 turnovers but Rowan held a 22-16 edge in points off turnovers. The Rowan bench outscored their Spartan counterparts, 38-13.
In York’s three losses, they have been out-rebounded by an average of eight caroms per game while they are averaging over 20 turnovers per contest. They also have sent their opponents to the line 66 times while they have made just 32 trips to the line in three games. In the Spartans’ six wins, they have a +8.8 rebounding margin, committed 17 turnovers per game and have made 12 more trips to the line while they have also made 12 more attempts than their opponents.
The Spartans are now off until December 30 when they travel to Rutgers-Camden for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
