Spartans Overcome Slow Start and Roll Past Blazers
FREDERICK, MD-The York College women’s basketball team overcame a very sluggish start to post a 77-44 Capital Athletic Conference victory at Hood College on Saturday afternoon in Frederick, MD. The Spartans improve to 14-4 overall and 6-3 in the CAC while the Blazers fall to 3-14 and 1-8 in their first year in the CAC.
The Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Blazers ran off a 12-2 spurt to take a 12-6 lead. The Spartans then began the climb back into the game as they embarked on a prolonged 20-4 run that turned the six point deficit into a 26-16 lead with 4:36 remaining in the half. The run was keyed by Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) as the senior forward had seven points on the spurt. The Spartans closed out the half with an April Sparkman (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) three as they took a 34-21 lead to a break.
The Blazers kept their deficit at 13 before the Spartans went on a 10-0 spurt early in the stanza to take a 50-27 lead with 12:54 remaining in the game. Hood cut the lead to 19 on a pair of Whitney Shultheis free throws with 10:07 remaining in the game but York responded with a 16-2 run to push the lead to 33 which is what the final margin ended up being.
The Spartans were paced by Daly as the senior tallied a very efficient 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor. Daly added five rebounds, two blocks and a pair of steals. Junior Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) had another impressive day as she had 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals in 32 minutes of action. Junior Amanda Andrews (Fallston, Md./Fallston) added 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals for York. Junior Donna Figenshu (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) chipped in with nine points while Sparkman and Chanel Perez (Biglerville, Pa./Gettysburg) each contributed eight points to the Spartan attack.
Jen Willison led the Blazers as she notched 16 points and eight rebounds, both of which were team-highs. Allyson Lethbridge and Schultheis each added nine points for the Blazers.
The Spartans finished the game shooting 48.4% from the floor and a cool 26.3% from downtown. The green and white converted 10-of-18 from the free throw line. The Spartan defense held Hood to just 30.6% shooting from the field including 22.7% from three. Hood was just slightly better than York from the free throw line as they went 9-for-15.
The Spartans forced the Blazers into 28 turnovers which resulted in 24 York points. The green and white also held a significant 34-12 edge in points in the paint.
York returns to action on Wednesday night when they host Villa Julie in a CAC contest. Tip time at the Grumbacher Center is set for 6:00 pm.
