Daly and Ward Recognized by the CAC
YORK, PA-York College women’s basketball players Kristen Daly (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and Keli Ward (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford) were selected to the 2008 All-Capital Athletic Conference squads as announced by the conference on Wednesday morning. Daly, a senior, earned first-team accolades while Ward, a junior, was selected as a second-teamer.
Daly concludes her career as one of the most decorated players in school history. She is a four-time All-CAC player including spending the last three years as a member of the first-team. Daly was the 2005 Rookie-of-the-Year in addition to being a second-team pick that year.
Daly finished her career with 1,585 points as she is third on the Spartans’ all-time scoring list. This season, Daly averaged 16.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She shot 50.6% from the floor, 50% from three and 75% from the free throw line. She handed out 66 assists, collected 40 steals, and blocked 15 shots. She ranked fourth in the CAC in scoring, sixth in rebounding, fifth in field goal percentage, seventh in free throw percentage, and sixth in defensive rebounding. Daly was the CAC Player-of-the-Week twice this year.
Spartan head coach Betsy Witman was pleased to see Daly earn the All-CAC honor again.
“Coaching Kristen has been a huge privilege,” says Witman. “She is a great player, a great teammate, and, most importantly, a great person. Kristen is one of the best players I have had the chance to coach. She certainly went out with an outstanding senior year.”
Daly was in double figures in 22 games including 10 20-plus point games. Daly tallied a season-high 26 points in the February 26 win over Wesley in the CAC quarterfinals. She also notched a team-high nine double-doubles. Daly recorded a season-high 14 rebounds three different games in 2007-08.
In addition to being third on the all-time scoring list, Daly accumulated 773 rebounds (7.3 rpg), 212 assists, 160 steals, and 62 blocked shots. She finished her career shooting 45.5% from the floor, 33% from three, and 73.1% from the line. Daly played in 106 career games, earning a start in each one of those games.
Ward earned her third All-CAC honors in as many years. She was the 2006 CAC Rookie-of-the-Year in addition to being a second-team pick. Last year, Ward was a first-team selection.
Ward finished the season averaging 14.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. She shot 45.4% from the floor, 40.2% from three and 83.6% from the free throw line. She ranked second in the CAC in assists, ninth in scoring, first in free throw percentage, tenth in field goal percentage, third in three-point field goal percentage, third in three-point field goals made, and first in assist-to-turnover ratio.
“Keli is a special player,” states Witman. “She does so many things well for us. Keli got off to a bit of a slow start with an injury but she was playing great over the final two months of the season. I look forward to her leading our team next season.”
Ward became the 11th member of the York College 1,000 career point club on February 23 at Marymount. Earlier in the year, she became York’s all-time leader in assists. Heading into her senior year, Ward has 1,032 career points, 559 rebounds, 426 assists, 147 steals, and 48 blocked shots. She is a 45.5% career shooter from the field including 35.4% from three. She has converted 78.7% of her career free throw attempts.
Ward headlines the returners for the Spartans who won a school-record 19 games. Next year, Witman returns nine of her top 10 scorers from this year while four of the five starters are also slated to return.
