A life-long resident of York, George A. Shorb graduated from York Catholic High School in 1965 and moved on to attend York Junior College for two years.  In 1967 he entered the United States Army and served with the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam.  Twice wounded in combat, he received two Purple Hearts among his service decorations.  Following military service he returned to York College, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1971.  He started his career in the paper business as a sales representative for P. H. Glatfelter Company, moving to the Atlantic Paper Company in 1976 as Vice President of Sales.  In 1985 he became President of Atlantic Paper Company and continues to serve in that position.

An active leader in the York community, George also extends his involvement to his alma mater.  He was selected as the first chairperson of the York College Collegiate Council in 1993, and he became a member of the Board of Trustees in 1994.  In 1991 he was elected to the York College Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in both soccer and golf.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, he is devoted to his family, which includes his wife Elizabeth, children Alex and Lisel, and parents and siblings also living in the York area.

Jim May

Jim May is a native of York County. After graduating from Dover High School he entered York College in the fall of 1968 as it became a four-year institution. Jim graduated in 1972 with a BS in Business management. After military service he began his career in banking at the York Bank and Trust Company (now M&T Bank) where he remains forty years later as a member of Senior Management in the Commercial Banking Division.

While at York College Jim earned eight varsity letters, four in soccer, and four in baseball. Many of his soccer records still remain after forty years earning him entry as a Charter Member into the York College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. He is also a member of the Central York County Baseball League Hall of Fame and The York County Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to York College, Jim is active in other community activities and organizations including York County Heritage Trust, Rotary Club of York, Farm and Natural Lands Trust, and York Sports Night. He and his wife Linda reside in West York and have two children and two grandchildren.

Phil Avillo

Phil Avillo joined the York College Department of History in September 1975 where he taught until his retirement in the Spring 2012. As a faculty member he participated actively in the life of the college, serving as Chair of the Department of History and Political Science, President of the Academic Senate, and on numerous college and department committees. He has been active in the community as well, serving on the boards of the York Suburban School District, the York Symphony, the York Suburban Dollars for Scholars, and the York Heritage Trust.

Phil holds degrees in history from Hofstra University (BA), the University of San Diego (MA), and the University of Arizona (PhD). After Hofstra he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a tour in Vietnam where he was wounded in combat. He began his graduate education in history after being discharged from the Marines.

Throughout his life, Phil has had a wide variety of athletic experiences. At Hofstra, he lettered in both football and lacrosse. He coached in York a number of youth athletic teams including baseball, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. While at the University of Arizona, he coached the Arizona Lacrosse Club for three years. From 1993-1999, he developed and coached the York College Men’s Lacrosse Club, taking it in 1999 to the NCAA III level where he coached the varsity team for its first two NCAA seasons.

Members of the Spartan Advance have the opportunity to support specific sports while at the same time contributing to the general welfare of the athletic department in a way that benefits all of YCP’s student-athletes.” 

Brandy Shope
Brandy Shope

A lifelong resident of York County, Brandy graduated from West York High School in 2001 and started her college career at Shippensburg University. She transferred to York College in August of 2003 where she earned her varsity letter in Volleyball. She was named to the all CAC teams in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and was a captain her final season with the Spartans. Brandy graduated  from York College with a degree in Public Relations.

After York College she started investing in her career and York County by volunteering with many organizations. Brandy was the former vice president of York Young Professionals, is a current member of the promotions committee for Downtown Inc. and volunteers for several other York based non-profits.

She is the Executive Director of Selection for Northwestern Mutual and owns her own consulting firm, I.C. Passion Consulting. Brandy works closely with York College to offer internships to York College Students as well as job opportunities. In the last three years she has hired 5 York College Graduates, and had 4 interns.

Brandy currently resides in Central York, with her husband Wayne and her sons Jalen, and Quinn.
