YORK, PA – The York College softball squad will be hosting a four-team fall tournament fundraiser on Saturday, September 30 at Spartan Stadium in York.
The tournament proceeds will be important and personal to many members of the Spartan softball family. All profits will be donated to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition in honor of Cheryl Behrenshausen, the wife of York's Assistant Coach Eric Behrenshausen, who is a breast cancer survivor and the inspiration for this fundraiser.
Spartan head coach Jen Petteys feels it's important that the team takes ownership of this day.
"I feel that it was very important for our players to take the lead in what they wanted to do and what cause they felt was worthy of getting their support," says Petteys. "We talk all the time about making an impact both on and off the field. We encourage our players to be responsible citizens and that volunteering in their community is something that we expect all our players do, not only as Spartans, but after they leave our program and begin their adult lives."
Petteys has also made sure that her players are succeeding in the classroom by evidence of their 3.59 team GPA during the 2017-18 academic year. Her squad won the women's William DeMeester Academic Award for the second year in a row. The award is earned by the team with the highest cumulative GPA for the year.
"We pride ourselves in being a complete program. We want to be great at softball, great in the classroom and great in our community. I was extremely proud of my team in all three prongs last year and I expect that to continue into this year," says Petteys. "I am proud of how they have banded together to organize this fundraiser and to pick a cause that is very important to everyone in our program."
Senior captains Joanna Marmo and Mia Ruffalo want all Spartans and community members to support the softball program's initiatives.
"We want to encourage all Spartans and all the members of our community to come out, watch some great softball and support this important fundraiser," says Ruffalo.
"Many members of our student body, our faculty, our staff and members of our community have been touched by the fight against cancer," says Marmo. "We would like anyone who has a loved one, a friend, or a teammate who has been fighting this awful disease to show their support by purchasing pink ribbons for $1.00 each. Each member of our program will have ribbons available for purchase from now until September 29. We will also have ribbons available for purchase during the tournament on the 29th. We will display the ribbons at the field during the tournament."
The tournament starts with the first pitch of game #1 at 8:00 am and features games through early evening. The Spartans will play their games at 8:00 am, 2:40 pm and 4:20 pm. York will be joined by Stevenson, Catholic and Eastern for the full day of softball and fundraising.
