How It Happened
• The Captains struck first in the battle of the top two teams in the Capital Athletic Conference in top of the first. With one out, they earned a runner when Melissa Jurkiewicz hit the batter, who then advanced to second on a wild pitch. CNU would score a pair of runs in the top half before Jurkiewicz forced a fly out with runners on the corners. The second run went unearned for the senior pitcher.

• The Captains would eventually stretch its lead to 7-0 in the top of the third, but York answered in the bottom half of the fourth inning. It started when Shyla Pastore singled through the right side. She moved to second when Haley Hirn singled to left field, and then Joanna Marmo singled to load the bases. With the bases juiced, Ashley Werner shot a single up the middle, scoring both Pastore and Hirn. York got another run when Julie Van O'Linda grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Marmo.

• In the bottom of the fifth, though, York erupted with five runs, enough to take an 8-7 lead. With one out, Pastore walked and then Ashley Meekins singled to left field, and the bases were loaded when Hirn  singled to right field. Marmo, just as she did in the fourth, came through with a single, scoring Pastore. Meekins came to score when Werner was hit by a pitch, and then Van O'Linda singled to bring home a pair of runs to tie the game at 7-7. Savannah Zittle was hit by a pitch to score the winning run, capping the extraordinary bottom of the fifth.

Ginger Lewis came in for the save in the top of the sixth and shut down the fourth-ranked Captains to seal an 8-7 win for the Spartans. She threw two scoreless innings, allowing just a single hit in the process. The win was just York's second all-time against CNU.

How It Happened
• Once again the Captains jumped on top in the away half of the first inning. Using two hits, CNU scored a run to take the early lead at 1-0. That lead, however, did not last long because the Spartans leveled the score at one in the bottom of the first. Shyla Pastore, also with the duties in the circle, reached on an error, and was moved when Ashley Meekins singled to left center. Haley Hirn, who finished with three hits in the first game, doubled down the left field line to drive in Pastore and tie the game.

• CNU took the lead in the top of the second with one run, but really extended its advantage in the top of the fourth with four runs on five hits. The Captains would score two more in the top of the fifth before the game was deemed official in the top of the sixth due to darkness.

York is now 2-9 all-time against the Captains … the Spartans snapped a four-game losing streak to CNU … first pitch was delayed 93 minutes … Haley Hirn went 5-for-5 on the day … Hirn is now hitting .313 on the season … she is one of six players hitting .300 or better with at least 27 games played … Ginger Lewis earned her second save of the season, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing just a single hit.

The Spartans will celebrate their Senior Day on Saturday when Mary Washington comes to Spartan Softball Stadium. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
