#6 Sea Gulls Sweep Spartans in Monday Double Dip

SALISBURY, MD – The York College Spartan softball squad suffered their second sweep of the year as sixth ranked Salisbury University blanked the Spartans in both ends of the twin bill on Monday afternoon in Salisbury. The Sea Gulls won game one, 2-0, and followed that with an 8-0 five-inning win in the nightcap.

How It Happened

• After three and a half scoreless innings, Salisbury broke through into the scoring column in the fourth. Annah Brittingham singled to right center. Brittingham then stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Katie Sebbane singled to short, scoring Brittingham with the game's first run. Caitlin Lake then drove home pinch runner Allison Clampitt with a two-out single through the right side for the 2-0 Salisbury lead.

• York's best threat came in the sixth inning. Katie Maloney started the inning with a walk. Ashley Werner then singled to first to put Spartans at first and second. The two Spartans each moved up 60 feet due to a wild pitch. Savannah Zittle then struck out but the ball temporarily eluded catcher Paige Knussman as Zittle took off for first. Maloney broke to the plate and was easily tagged out by Knussman for the first out of the inning. Brittingham then got a strikeout and a fly out to end the threat.

Game One Notes: The Spartans shutout on just one hit with one error while Salisbury got their two runs on eight hits with no errors … the Spartans lone hit was Ashley Werner's sixth inning infield single … Salisbury's Annah Brittingham struck out a career-high 15 in the game … it is just the second time this season that York has struck out double digit times in a game (10 vs. Hanover on March 3).

How It Happened

• Salisbury jumped on York starter Jenny Coyle for two runs in the bottom of the first inning and it could have been worse. The Spartans committed a pair of errors during the frame to extend the Sea Gull inning. Salisbury left the bases loaded as they had to settle for two runs.

• Salisbury pushed the lead to 6-0 with a four spot in the bottom of the second. Paige Knussman had a two run blast in the inning while Annah Brittingham launched a solo homer in the inning.

• The Sea Gulls scored one run in the third and one run in the fourth to invoke the mercy rule after five innings of play.

• The Spartans loaded the bases in the fourth but couldn't push anything across as they suffered their second consecutive shutout.

Game Two Notes: The Spartans got shutout on three hits with five errors in the game while Salisbury got eight runs on 12 hits with one miscue … York has now been shutout five times for the year … it's the first time York had been swept in a doubleheader since March 17 at Messiah … York did not record an extra base hit in either game during the day … It's the second time this season that York had gone back-to-back games without an extra base hit … the five errors is a new season-high for the Spartans … York did not record a pitching strikeout in game two and that is just the third time this year that has happened … York falls to 3-54 all time against Salisbury as the Gulls have won 21 straight against the Green and White.

What's Next: The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they host Penn State Harrisburg in their final home CAC doubleheader of the year at Spartan Stadium. First pitch for game one is set for 3:00 pm.
