#4 CNU Sweeps Spartans in CAC Twin Bill

YORK, PA   – The York College Spartan softball squad played the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains tough but ultimately dropped a doubleheader to the Captains on Saturday afternoon in York. The Captains posted a 5-4 come-from-behind win in the opener and then bounced the Spartans 10-4 in the nightcap. The

How It Happened

• The Spartans jumped out to an early lead as Savannah Zittle led off the bottom of the first with an infield single to first. Zittle was sacrificed over to second and then rode home on Joanna Marmo's line drive rocket home run to left field, putting the hosts up 2-0.

• York made it 4-0 with two more runs in the bottom of the second. Melissa Jurkiewicz drew a lead off walk. She was sacrificed over to second before Courtney Gall was hit by a pitch. Katie Maloney singled down the left field line to plate Jurkiewicz. After the Captains got a ground out, Ashley Werner singled to center to score Maloney with York's fourth run.

• The Captains got a single run back in the top of the third as Scoop Simon blasted a long home run to right field, cutting York's lead to 4-1. The home run was the fourth of the year for the Captain All-American.

CNU came back in the top of the sixth to score three times, tying the game at four. Jenna Sprinkle opened the inning with a double to deep center. Sarah Cook followed with a single to deep short and Sprinkle aggressively took third on the play while Cook was able to go to second on the throw back to third. After a pair of infield pop ups, the Spartans elected to pitch around Simon to load the bases. Leah Batchelor made the Spartans pay with a sharp single to right, scoring a run. The Captains then were the beneficiary of a big Spartan error that allowed two runs to score, tying the game at four.

• The Captains got the game winning run in the top of the seventh as Tori Clarke led off the frame with a single to center. Kayla Brennan pinch ran for Clark and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out to second for the second out of the inning, Rachael Payne singled to right to score Brennan with the go-ahead run.

• York got runners on first and second with one out but a fly out to center and a pop up to second ended the game as the Spartans came up just short against the fourth-ranked Captains.

Game One Notes: The Spartans had four runs on four hits with one error while the fourth-ranked Captains had five runs on 12 hits with one error … The loss snaps York's six game win streak … the loss for Melissa Jurkiewicz snaps a four game winning streak for her … Jurkiewicz walked three hitters in the game, snapping a streak of 25.1 innings without a walk … Jurkiewicz walked a season high three in the setback as she had just five walks for the year coming into the game … York did not have a double in the game for just the seventh time this year and the Spartans are 4-3 in those games … Joanna Marmo blasted her third home run of the year with her two run shot in the first inning.

How It Happened

• The Captains opened the scoring with a three spot in the top of the second inning as Rachael Payne launched a three-run shot to deep center as CNU jumped on York early. The Captains got their three runs on four hits in the frame.

• CNU made it 4-0 with Jenna Sprinkle RBI double off the wall in left center.

• York got on the board in the third as Katie Maloney and Savannah Zittle had back-to-back two-out doubles.

• The Captains continued their offensive push in the fourth as they plated another three runs but this time all three runs came after there were two outs. Doubles from Leah Andrews and Scoop Simon scored the first run. Then Lia Batchelor plated Simon with an RBI single. Batchelor stole second and scored on a Brittany Waters RBI single.

• The Spartans cut the lead to 7-4 as they tallied a three spot in the bottom of the sixth as Joanna Marmo opened the inning with a solo homer, her second of the day. Carleigh Ruleman singled with one out and then scored on a Miranda Shandy bomb to centerfield.

• CNU closed out the scoring with three more runs in the top of the seventh, providing the final 10-4 margin of victory.

Game Two Notes: The Spartans got four runs on eight hits with two errors while CNU got 10 runs on 16 hits with no errors … CNU got a combined 28 hits in the two games while the Spartans had 12 hits in the two contests … Freshman Jenny Coyle suffered her first collegiate loss as she allowed a career-high seven runs on ten hits in 3.2 innings of work … Coyle had allowed four runs in her previous 17 innings of work … Joanna Marmo had her second home run in as many games as she now tied with Carleigh Ruleman for the team lead with four bombs … The York pitching staff allowed two home runs in game two and three home runs in the two games … York came into the game having allowed just two home runs for the year …. York is now 0-4 against nationally ranked squads.

What's Next: The Spartans return to Spartan Stadium on Sunday afternoon as a part of a back-to-back CAC twin bill when they host the University of Mary Washington on Sunday at 12:00 pm. The games are the third and fourth of a season-high eight game home stand.
