Spartans Extend Win Streak to Six with Sweep of Eastern

YORK, PA – The York College Spartan softball squad ran their win streak to six as they swept the Eastern University Eagles on Saturday afternoon in St. David's, PA. The Spartans won game one 8-1 and followed that up with a 3-0 shutout in the nightcap. York improves to 11-3 overall while the Eagles fall to 3-7.

How It Happened

• The Spartans opened the scoring with a Joanna Marmo solo blast to left with one out in the second.

Katie Maloney pushed the Spartan lead to 2-0 in the fourth with a run scoring double to left.

• York extended the lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Courtney Gall led off the inning with a home run to left center. Ashley Werner then plated Maloney with a run for the second tally of the inning.

• The Eagles spoiled the shutout with an unearned on a pair of Spartan errors in the bottom of the sixth, cutting York's lead to 4-1.

• York doubled their scoring total with four runs on four hits in the top of the seventh. A pair of Eastern errors aided the Spartan uprising in the inning.

Game One Notes: The Spartans got eight runs on a season-high 17 hits and a season-high tying three errors while Eastern got one run on five hits with four errors … The Spartan win streak sits at a season-high five … Courtney Gall's home run was her first collegiate round tripper … Melissa Jurkiewicz won her fourth straight decision with the victory … Jurkiewicz's ERA now stands at 0.60 as she has 45 strikeouts in 47 innings of work.

How It Happened

• York got on the board with all the runs they would need in the third inning. Katie Maloney walked and moved to second on a passed ball. Maloney moved to third on a ground out and scored in an Ashley Werner single. Freshman Joanna Marmo then drove home Werner with her second home run of the day as the Spartans led 3-0.

• Those three runs would be more than enough for sophomore Courtney Martin as she twirled a five hit shutout. The Eagles got two runners on in the fifth but Martin got a strikeout to end the threat.

Game Two Notes: The Spartans got three runs on seven hits with no errors while the Eagles got no runs on five hits with an error … the shutout is the second of the season and the first for Courtney Martin … Martin has lowered her ERA to 3.28 after starting the season by allowing 11 runs to Otterbein … Martin has allowed just 15 runs and 10 earned in her last 37.2 innings, good for an ERA of 1.88 … Marmo has an eight game hit streak after having a home run in each game in the doubleheader … The Spartans are now hitting over .300 as a team as they are at .307 for the year … during their six game win streak, York has not allowed more than two earned runs in a game … during the streak, York pitchers have struck out 25 and walked just five ... York has now hit eight home runs for the year while their opponents have not hit one.

What's Next: The Spartans return to action on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Messiah College to face the Falcons in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one in Grantham is set for 3:00 pm.
