CLERMONT, FLA  – The York College softball team opened their 2016 season with a split during the opening day of their 2016 spring trip in Clermont, Florida.

How It Happened

• The Cardinals opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Chey Rowe laid down a bunt single to score Racheal Owens with the game's first run.

• Otterbein blew the game open in the third with a ten run inning. Bailey McElwain opened the scoring with an RBI single. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, McElwain came home when Courtney Hanna was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Savannah Sarkine then lashed a two run single to left, pushing the Cardinal lead to 5-0.  Molly Riggs made it 6-0 with an RBI ground out. The next big blow in the inning came when McElwain drilled a bases loaded triple to push the lead to 10-0.

• The Spartans did not get a hit in their five innings of offense.

Katie Maloney was York's only base runner with her first inning walk.

Game One Notes: Otterbein sent 13 hitters to the plate in the fateful third inning … York committed a pair of errors in the inning, making a pair of the runs unearned …  ­York falls to 1-3 in season openers under head coach Jen Petteys.

How It Happened

• The Spartans broke open a scoreless game with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Melissa Jurkiewicz drove in the first run with a single to left. After Carliegh Ruleman scored on an error, Jurkiewicz score York's third run on an Hornet error in right field. Ashley Werner then scored Savannah Galati with an RBI single to center. Werner came around to score on a Savannah Zittle single.

• York scored their sixth run on a Jurkiewicz single to left.

• Jurkiewicz allowed just one hit, a leadoff single in the third.

Game Two Notes: Melissa Jurkiewicz's 10 strikeouts established a new career high … it was her eighth career complete game and her second complete game shutout … The Spartans picked up their first hit of the season on Carleigh Ruleman's fourth inning single to left … all six of York's runs were unearned as Lyndon State made six errors in the game … The Hornets have committed 40 errors in seven games.

What's Next: The Spartans return to action on Monday, February 29 when they face Cabrini and St. Vincent during day two of the 2016 spring trip. The Spartans face Cabrini at 9:00 am and St. Vincent at 11:00 am.
