WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College softball team saw their offense fall silent on Thursday as they were swept by McDaniel College in a non-conference doubleheader in Westminster, Maryland. The Green Terror won game one 9-0 and concluded the sweep with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
The Green Terror improves to 24-10 overall while York falls to 21-17 with the two losses.
In game one, McDaniel jumped on the board with a run in the bottom of the first. Spartan starter Courtney Martin (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) settled in and kept the Spartan deficit at one until the bottom of the fifth. The Green Terror pushed their lead to 4-0 with a trio of runs in the fifth. McDaniel then ended the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
While the McDaniel offense was clicking, the Spartans were held in check by senior Caroline Brehm as she twirled a two-hit shutout to improve to 18-6. Brehm struck out nine and did not walk a batter as she faced two batters over the minimum. She needed just 77 pitches to navigate her six innings.
Martin took the loss as she allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 12 hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 5.1 innings of work. She falls to 14-12 with the loss.
Payton Lewis led the Green Terror with three hits, two runs and an RBI. Tayler Hishon was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Jamie Weisser added two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Ashley Werner (York, Pa./Dallastown) had the Spartans' only two hits as she singled with two-out in the third and again with one out in the sixth.
In game two, the Green Terror opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a single run. They pushed the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the third. The McDaniel lead grew to 4-0 with a single run in the fourth.
The Green Terror closed out the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the sixth to provide for the final 5-1 score.
Valerie Lamb earned the win in the circle as she allowed one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk in seven innings. Lamb improves to 3-2 with the win
Melissa Jurkiewicz (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) took the loss as she allowed five runs on nine hits in her six innings of work. She struck out two and did not walk a batter as she falls to 5-5.
Hishon led the Green Terror as she was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Roxana Aviles added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Jayci Cristaudo (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) led York with two hits while Ruleman and Miranda Shandy (Bowie, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) each had singles for the Green and White. Ruleman had the Spartans' lone RBI.
The Spartans return to action on Friday when they travel to Eastern to play the Eagles in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set for a 3:00 pm start.
