MIDDLETOWN, PA – The York College softball squad split their Wednesday Capital Athletic Conference twin bill at Penn State Harrisburg in Middletown. The Lions stunned the Spartans with a 2-1 walk off win in the opener. The Spartans then bounced the Lions 10-1 in five innings in the nightcap.
The Spartans are now 14-8 overall and 3-3 in the CAC while the Lions are 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the league.
Game one was a pitcher's dual as both starters held the offenses in check for most of the game. York got their lone run in the fourth as Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) singled, moved to second on an error and third on a wild pitch. She scored on a sacrifice fly to second base as Emily Glatts (Brookhaven, Pa./Padua Academy) plated Maloney for York's lone run.
The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Mackenzie Trafka RBI single with two outs in the inning.
The Spartans had a chance to take the lead as Jayci Cristaudo (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) opened the seventh with a lead-off double. She stole third but was gunned down when she tried to score on a ground ball to second base.
Harrisburg won the game in the bottom of the seventh as Gabrielle Wolfe plated Kayle Seyfert with a sacrifice fly to end the game and give the victory to the hosts.
Wolfe earned the win as she allowed one unearned run on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. She improves to 5-3 with the win. Courtney Martin (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) suffered the hard-luck loss as she allowed two runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and one walk. She falls to 12-7 with the loss.
Wolfe led the Lion offense, as she was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Jenna Rupakus also had a pair of knocks for the Lions. Seyfert was 1-for-3 with a run scored while Trafka was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Cristaudo led York as she was 3-for-4 while Maloney was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Game two saw a much different Spartan team as they exploded for a seven run first inning to seize immediate control of the game. The Spartans sent 11 players to the plate as the washed the poor taste of game one out of their mouths.
Harrisburg got one back in the bottom of the first but York scored three more in the top fifth to close out the win.
Melissa Jurkiewicz (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) twirled a gem as she allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Amanda Hartman suffered the loss as she allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 12 hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Hartman falls to 6-4 with the loss.
Cristaudo led the Spartan offense as she was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Maloney was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Jurkiewicz was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Rieley Loch and Emily Parmer led the Lions with two hits each. Wolfe had the Lions' lone RBI in the game.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday afternoon when they host Frostburg State University in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. The games, originally scheduled for Friday, were moved up because of the predicted rain in York on Friday. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start at Spartan Stadium.
