CAPE CORAL, FL – The York College softball squad split their two games during the fourth day of their stay at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida. In the opener, the Spartans posted a 1-0 win over Olivet. York dropped game two to Kenyon, 8-5.
The Spartans are now 5-3 for the campaign. Olivet is now 1-1 while Kenyon improves to 4-2 overall.
In the opener, freshman right-hander Courtney Martin (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) twirled her third shutout of the trip as she scattered three hits in earning the 1-0 win.
Martin faced a little trouble in the first as Ashley Milheim singled to open the game. Milheim eventually made her way to third before Martin got a line out to second to end the threat.
Martin retired the next 14 hitters in a row before allowing a two out infield single in the sixth inning. Martin would give up a harmless seventh inning single, setting the stage for the dramatic bottom of the seventh.
After the Spartans had struggled at the plate throughout the game, York got something going with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Jayci Cristaudo (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopitcon) coaxed a full count walk. She then stole second base with Savannah Zittle (Port Deposit, Md./Catholic High School of Baltimore) at the plate. With Cristaudo at second, Zittle shot a single to left field. Cristaudo motored around third and scored the game winner for the Spartans.
Milheim, Kelsey Scheenks, and Larissa Ludwig all had singles for Olivet.
Martin earned the win with five strikeouts in her seven innings of work. Daleney Maki suffered the loss as she allowed one run on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts in her 6.2 innings of action.
In the game against Kenyon, the Spartans struck first for a trio of runs in the top of the second. Martin struck the big blow in the inning with a bases loaded single to score a pair. York got their third run via a Kenyon throwing error.
Kenyon responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second but it was only with the aid of a Spartan error as both runs were unearned. Kenyon tied the game at three with a single run in the bottom of the fourth.
Megan Martin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) put the Spartans back on top with an RBI single to left in the top of the fifth inning.
Kenyon struck for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. They got their four runs on four hits with one Spartan error in the frame.
The Spartans trimmed their deficit to 7-5 as Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern) blasted her third home run of the year, a solo shot to right center with one out in the sixth.
Kenyon got that run right back when Lindsey Susolik homered to center with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
Maloney got a two outs single in the top of the seventh but was erased on a fielder's choice as the Spartans saw their three game win streak snapped.
Susolik and Delaney led Kenyon as they each had a pair of hits. Howard was 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Maloney banged out a pair of hits while she also scored a run. Courtney Martin added a hit and a pair of RBI.
Maddy Stark earned the win for Kenyon as she allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks in her seven innings of work. Stark improves to 2-1 with the win.
Courtney Martin suffered the loss as she falls to 5-3. Martin allowed eight runs, but only four earned, on ten hits. She walked two and did not strikeout a batter for the first time in her Spartan career.
The Spartans close out their spring trip to Ft. Myers on Friday when they face St. John Fisher at 9:00 am followed by an 11:00 am contest against Newbury.
