Spartan Softball Splits Pair in Season Opener in Florida

FT. MYERS, FLA – The York College softball squad opened its 2015 campaign with a split during their first day at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida on Sunday. The Spartans dropped a 4-3 decision to Clark in the opener before earning a 3-2 victory over Franklin in game two.

The Spartans got off to a fantastic start in game one against Clark. The Green and White got a two-run double from junior Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) to open the scoring in the top of the first. Payton Hill would come around to score when little sister Carli Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) ripped a single in her first collegiate at-bat. Carli Hill stole second and moved to third on a Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northern) single but the duo would be stranded as the Spartans had to settle for the 3-0 lead.

The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the third as they reached Spartan starter Courtney Martin (Willow Street, Pa./Lampter-Strausburg) for three runs in the inning.  All three runs came on a bases loaded double by Rachel Kraytenberg.

While the Spartans were explosive in the first, Clark starter Hayley Buckheit stymied the Green and White over the next six innings of the game. York had just one hit and three base runners over the final six frames. Buckheit retired the last ten Spartans she faced in the game.

The Cougars plated the game-winning run in the sixth when Kraytenberg doubled and scored on an Anjelica Gonzales RBI single.

Kraytenberg led the Cougars, as she was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Alyssa Write added a pair of hits while Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Payton Hill led the Green and White, as she was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Carli Hill was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Buckheit earned the win as she went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout. Martin took the loss as she allowed four runs on six hits with a walk. Martin struck out ten in her collegiate debut.

In the nightcap, the Spartans opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) plated Martin with a sacrifice fly for York's first run. Payton Hill then tripled to score Jayci Cristaudo (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopitcon) for the Spartans' second run of the frame.

Franklin notched single runs in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth innings as the game was tied heading to the bottom of the fifth. York's game winning rally started with a pinch hit single from Taylor Hensley (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air). Hensley moved to second on a ground out. After a pop out for the second out, Megan Martin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) tripled to score Hensley with the go-ahead run.

Courtney Martin closed out the win as she set Franklin down in order in the last two innings as York earned its first win of the year.

Courtney Martin earned the win as she tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits. She struck out one and walked another.

Bailey Lindamood threw the first 2.2 innings as she allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. McKensie Vanosdol took the loss in relief as she allowed a run on three hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work as she falls to 1-1.

Ruleman led the York offense with two hits while Maloney, Payton Hill and Megan Martin each had a hit and an RBI.

Jessica Ayers and Katie Struewing each had a hit and an RBI for Franklin.

The Spartans return to action on Monday when they face Wartburg and Bluffton in Fort Myers. The Wartburg game is set for an 11:00 am first pitch while York tangles with Bluffton at 1:00 pm.
