Spartans Drop a Pair to #15 CNU
YORK, Pa. – The York College softball team was swept by No. 15 Christopher Newport in a pair of Capital Athletic Conference games on Tuesday at Spartan Stadium by scores of 8-1 and 4-1.
Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) and Lauren Lum (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Trabuco Hills) paced the Spartans (8-12, 0-2 CAC) with four hits each on the day and Maloney scored both of York's two total runs.
In game one, York tallied its only run of the contest in the fifth after a double by Maloney and a walk by Mackenzie Ewell (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) set up an RBI single for sophomore Natalie Fritz (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg).
The Captains (1-5, 3-1) opened game one with two tallies in the top of the first inning and tacked on five more runs through the fourth and fifth. CNU notched one more run in the top of the seventh to bring its run total to eight.
Maloney, Fritz and Lum all finished game one with two hits. Maloney scored the team's only run, while Fritz picked up the RBI.
Christopher Newport's Krista Lewis picked up the win and improved to 11-2 as she tossed five innings, allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Jennifer Taff (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) was credited with the loss as her record fell to 6-8 as she went the distance, allowing eight runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
In game two, York took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Maloney scored from third due to a throwing error by the catcher, and that would be the only run the Green and White would tally in the contest.
York's best chance at another run came in the sixth with runners on first and third. The Spartans stranded the runner at third as they grounded into the inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Christopher Newport tied the game, 1-1, in the second before a sacrifice fly, a solo home run and an RBI double in the fifth pushed the Captains' lead to the eventual final score of 4-1.
CNU's Hanah Marshal collected the win and improves to 7-3 as she went six innings, allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) was credited with loss and her record falls to 1-1 as she tossed four and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
York returns to action on Wednesday in a conference doubleheader clash with Mary Washington. First pitch from Spartan Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
