Spartans 0-2 On Day Two of Spring Trip
MYRTLE BEACH, SC. – The York College softball team finished the second day of their spring trip 0-2. The Spartans fell to Eastern 5-1 and came up short against kings 4-2.
With the losses the Spartans are now 1-7 on the season.
Senior Hannah Hugel (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) scored the only run of the game for the Spartans. Hugel's run came in the first inning off a right field single from Payton Hill (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance).
Eastern answered York's run in the first inning with two of their own. Janelle Fair earned herself a two run homerun to help her team take the lead. The Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the second with two more runs and once again in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Spartans struggled to get the bats going throughout the entire game, finishing with only five hits.
Hill paced the Spartans on offense with one hit and one RBI. Hugel was the only player to reach home plate. Kayleen Bell (Herndon, Va./Westfield), Aryn Johnston (Bowie, Md./Bowie), Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) and Cara Rubinaccio (Boonton,N.J./Morris Knolls) each recorded a hit.
Freshman Terra Diehl (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) recorded the loss for the Spartans. Diehl pitched 0.2 innings. She allowed two runs on four hits with one homerun. Urkuski came in for Diehl and pitched 5.1 innings for the Green and White. She allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Leading the way for the Eagles on offense was Janelle Fair. Fair went 2-for-3 with one run and three RBI's. Kasey Williams was 2-for-4 with two runs and Ashley Siegman was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Fair earned the win for Eastern in the circle. Fair pitched all seven innings. She allowed only run one on five hits. She also recorded six strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, against King's, the Spartans once again struggled offensively. The Monarchs got on the scoreboard first with a homerun in the bottom of the second inning. The Spartans answered King's back with a run of their own in the top of the third. Bell hit a single to left field that allowed Jena Ruby (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) to score. The next inning, York took a 2-1 lead after Sarah Harris's (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) single helped Sara Thacker (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) reach home. Thacker's run would be the last time the Green and White would earn a run.
King's Maggie Gola recorded her second homerun of the game in the bottom of the fourth. The Monarchs followed up Gola's homer with two more runs to take a 4-2 lead.
York had a chance to take back the lead in the seventh inning. Bell, Urkuski and Thacker all got on to load the bases. Unfortunately, the Spartans left all three players stranded on base.
Ruby finished the game 3-for-3 with one run to pace the Spartans offense. Thacker was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Bell, Johnston and Harris all finished 2-for-4.
Pitcher Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) recorded the loss. Levine pitched six innings and faced 26 batters. She allowed four runs on nine hits with one walk, three strikeouts and two homeruns.
King's Nicolette Pizzo went 3-for-3 with one hit. Maggie Gola had an impressive day, going 2-for-3 with two homeruns.
Recording the win for the Monarchs in the circle was Karissa Kross. Kross is now 2-0. She pitched all seven innings
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday morning for two more games. York takes on Ursinus at 9:00 am and Penn St.-Hazelton at 11:00 am.
