Softball Concludes Atlanta Stay Sunday

ATLANTA, GA – The York College softball team concluded their weekend stay in Atlanta, Georgia with a pair of losses in the second day of the Emory Invitational. The Spartans fell to Ferrum 6-0 in the opener before the #23 ranked Emory Eagles downed the Spartans 9-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

The Spartans are now 0-4 for the season while Ferrum is 2-2 and Emory is 8-0.

In the opener, the Panthers jumped on Spartan starter Terra Diehl (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) for three runs on four hits in the top of the first. Suzanne Plasters, Courtney Burner, and Karly Thompson each had run scoring hits in the inning.

Ferrum added three more runs in the second keyed by a two-run double off the bat of Sadie Wallace as the lead grew to 6-0 through an inning and a half of play.

The Spartans offense never got anything going in game one as the Spartans had just four hits and only seven total base runners in the loss.

Diehl took the loss for the Spartans as she allowed three runs on four hits with a walk in just 0.2 innings of work. She falls to 0-2 with the loss. Senior Cory Urkuski (Mohnton, Pa./Twin Valley) came out of the pen and threw the ball well as she allowed three runs on four hits in 6.1 innings of work. She struck out five and also walked five but threw the ball well enough to keep York in the game.

Kaitlyn Culler earned the win for the Panthers as she threw five shutout innings, scattering two hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Aiyana Lew tossed the final two innings and allowed two hits while she struck out two and walked one.

Wallace led Ferrum as she was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Shelbie Hall and Burner each had two knocks for the Panthers.

York had four singles in the game and only six base runners in the contest.

In game two, the Eagles blew the game wide open with a nine-run bottom of the third inning. The Eagles notched the nine runs on eight hits and a pair of Spartan errors.

Amanda Kardys earned the win in relief for Emory. She tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts. Madeleine Lowery started and allowed three hits with three walks and a strikeout in her 2.1 innings of action. Kardys improves to 4-0 with the win.

Freshman Morgan Levine (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) absorbed the loss as she allowed nine runs, five earned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts and a walk in four innings of action. She falls to 0-2 with the loss.

Megan Light led the Eagles as she was 2-for-3 with a grand slam. Micah Scharff added a three-run double while Lauren Gorodetsky also had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Freshman centerfielder Kayleen Bell (Herndon, Va./Westfield) had two hits to lead the Spartan offense. Bell had a team-high five hits in the four Spartan games this weekend. The Spartans again went without an extra base hit in the game.

For the weekend, the Spartans were outscored 33-2 as they hit a combined .209 with three extra base hits, all doubles. York struck out 24 times and drew only seven walks in the four games.

The Spartans return to action on Monday, March 4 when they begin their spring trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Spartans will play eight games during the trip before making their 2013 home debut on March 11 against Shenandoah.
