WINCHESTER, VA – The York College softball squad made their final road trip of the year as they traveled to Shenandoah University on Friday. The Hornets swept the Spartans with an 8-0 win in the opener followed by an 8-7 victory in 10 innings in the nightcap.
The Hornets close out their regular season with a mark of 24-17 while the Spartans fall to 13-23 with the two losses.
In the opener, the Hornets tallied a seven-run third inning as they cruised to the game one win.
Brooke Over was the beneficiary of the game one offense for the Hornets. She went six shutout innings as she allowed just three hits while she had seven strikeouts and one walk.
Senior Brittany Therres took the loss as she allowed eight runs, but only four earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks in 5.2 innings of work. She falls to 12-14 with the setback.
The Hornets were led by the duo of Lauren McCabe and Denise Mitchell as they each had three hits. McCabe added two RBI and a run scored while Mitchell chipped in a run scored and an RBI.
The Spartans committed three errors as they allowed four unearned runs in the game.
In the nightcap, the Hornets tallied two runs in the bottom of the 10th to pull out the walk-off win.
York opened the scoring with single runs in the first and third innings before the Hornets tied the game at two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Shenandoah posted two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take the 5-2 lead.
York tied the game in the sixth as the Spartans strung together four hits to plate a trio of runs. Urkuski had an RBI single while Christina Andrulat added a two-run single to left.
Each team scored single runs in the eighth before the Green and White took a short-lived 7-6 lead in the top of the tenth. The Hornets won the game with two in the bottom of the inning.
Over earned her second win of the day in relief as she threw five innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks. She improves to 14-12 overall with the two victories.
Urkuski suffered the loss as she tossed a season-high five innings in relief, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks. She falls to 0-5 for the year.
Both offenses were on full display as they combined for 15 runs, 29 hits and 26 runners left on base in the game.
Morgan Coble paced Shenandoah as she was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Mitchell contributed two hits, two runs scored and an RBI while Heather Sink was 1-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.
O'Leary led the Green and White as she banged out three hits in addition to driving in a run. Urkuski finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Andrulat was 1-for-2 with her two-run single. Hugel chipped in with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
The Spartans conclude their regular season on Tuesday when they host McDaniel College in a non-conference doubleheader at Spartan Stadium. Game on is set for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
