Softball Splits Twinbill at Misericordia
DALLAS, PA – The York College softball squad split a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Misericordia University in Dallas, PA. The Spartans won game one 4-3 before falling to the Cougars 14-5 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Spartans started the scoring in the fourth on a Sara Thacker home run to left center. The home run was the first of Thacker's collegiate career.
Senior Brittany Therres added to the lead with a solo home run of her own to lead off the sixth as the York lead grew to 2-0. The Spartans picked up a huge pair of runs in the seventh as Hannah Hugel led off the frame with a triple. Senior Brittany Schlorff knocked in Hugel with a triple of her own as the lead grew to 3-0. After the next two Spartans were retired, Therres plated Schlorff with an RBI single.
The Spartans needed all four of those runs because in the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars struck for three runs. Therres retired the first two batters of the inning and was on pitch away from a complete game shutout but a big Spartan error opened the door for Kat LaBrie to jack a three run homer after the error and a walk. The Cougars got a two-out single after the home run but Therres got a ground out to third to end the game.
Therres improved to 10-9 with the win as she won her fourth straight. She allowed three unearned runs on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout in seven innings of work. Caitlin Cromley took the loss as she allowed four runs on nine hits in seven innings of action. She struck out five and did not walk a batter as he falls to 11-7 overall.
Therres paced the offense, as she was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Schlorff and Thacker each went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the win.
LaBrie had a huge game for the Cougars, as she was 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Kristi Seiler added two hits to the eight-hit Misericordia attack.
In the nightcap, the Cougars used a seven-run third inning to turn a 4-4 game into an 11-4 margin. After the Spartans scored in the top of the fifth, the Cougars finished off the game with a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
LaBrie completed the day with another perfect performance at the plate, as she was again 4-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Cromley added three hits, three RBI and three runs scored while Shawn Beil contributed two hits three RBI and a run scored in the 14-hit Cougar attack.
Cory Urkuski was the lone Spartan with multiple hits in game two as she was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Thacker hit her second home run of the day, as she was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Jess Armillay earned the win in relief for the Cougars as she tossed four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. She improves to 5-5 for the year.
Urkuski suffered the loss as she allowed five runs, four earned, on three hits and a walk in 1.2 innings of work. She falls to 0-4 for the campaign.
The Spartans conclude their regular season conference slate on Saturday as they travel to Salisbury University to face the Sea Gulls in a conference twin bill. Game one is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
