Bobcats Top Spartans in Midweek CAC Doubleheader
YORK, Pa. – The York College softball squad dropped both game of a doubleheader to visiting Frostburg St. in Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday in York. The Spartans fell 5-2 in the first game before losing 1-0 in eight innings in the latter tilt. For the season, York now stands at 5-11 (2-2 CAC) while the Bobcats improve to 12-10 (4-0 CAC).
In the first contest of the afternoon, the Bobcats tallied three of their five runs in the top of the first inning. Loading the bases with no one out, designated player Amanda Hennessee singled through the middle to plate the visitor's first two runs. Hennessee, who had advanced to second on the throw from her single and then to third on a Megan Butzner base hit, then came home on a Shari Beavers single to left. Up 3-0 after one, the Bobcats would not relinquish the lead throughout the rest of the tilt.
York did cut into the Frostburg lead with a run in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a Brittany Therres double to left center. With two outs, Erin O'Leary knocked a single up the middle allowing Therres to step to the plate. The Spartan hurler's R.B.I. cut the Bobcat lead to 3-1 after one.
In the bottom of the third, York threatened with a trio of hits. Cory Urkuski led off the Spartans' half with a single and, with one out, was pushed to second on a Brittany Schlorff single to left. After York's second out of the inning, Therres looked to help herself once more. The senior came through with a baseknock to right, however, a strong throw from Bobcat rightfielder Emilee Ray caught Urkuski at the plate for the final out of the third.
Frostburg added a pair of insurance tallies, one in the fifth and one in the seventh, before the Green and White came up in the bottom of the seventh. York did scratch across a run in the seventh, as Schlorff notched a R.B.I. single to plate Christina Andrulat with two outs. However, the Spartans were unable to cut into the Bobcat lead any further as Frostburg tucked away the 5-2 game one victory.
Lauren Scrivener recorded the win in the circle for the Bobcats as she tossed a complete game to improve to 3-4. Therres took the loss to move to 4-5.
Game number two needed an extra inning to decide the victor as the scoreboard registered zeros throughout the first seven innings of play.
In the top of the eighth, the Bobcats tallied the only run of the contest. With the international tiebreaker placing Frostburg's Taylor Vandegrift on second, she moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Ray. Caitlin Lovend followed that sacrifice with one of her own as she registered a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Vandegrift for what would prove to be the game-winning run.
In the top of the seventh, the Bobcats threatened to notch the go-ahead run with runners on second and third with two outs. However, York's Urkuski registered a strike out from the circle as to keep the score level at 0-0.
Jordan Wright recorded the victory for the Bobcats as she hurled eight strong innings for the visitors. Wright only allowed three Spartan hits as she improved her season mark to 8-1. Urkuski, who hurled four innings in relief of Therres, takes the loss and falls to 0-2.
The Spartans are back in action on Friday, March 30, as they travel to Frederick, Md. to take on Hood College in a CAC doubleheader. First pitch for game one is slated for 3:00 pm.
