VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The York College softball team split their two games in the opening round of the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Bash on Friday in Virginia Beach. The Spartans downed Lynchburg 6-2 in the opener before falling to Meredith 3-2 in the nightcap.
In the win over the Hornets, the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Lynchburg answered with a solo home run from lead off hitter Jessi Hall.
The Green and White recaptured the lead in the third as Hannah Hugel led off with a bunt single. She stole second and moved to third on a Cara Rubinaccio single. Hugel came into score on a Brittany Therres ground out to second. Therres would reach first on an error as the Spartans had runners at first and third with no outs. The Spartans wouldn't be able to plate another run in the frame as they led 2-1.
York extended the lead with two runs in the fourth courtesy of a Rubinaccio RBI single and a Therres sacrifice fly to center. The Green and White pushed the lead to 6-1 with two more runs in the fifth with an Erin O'Leary RBI single and a Hornet error allowing another Spartan run.
Hall closed out the scoring with her second home run of the day to lead off the sixth providing for the final 6-2 margin.
Therres earned the win as she threw five strong innings, allowing a run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout. She improves to 2-2 with the victory. Cory Urkuski threw the final two innings, allowing a run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Kaitlyn Morris suffered the loss as she allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits in 3.1 innings. She walked one and did not record a strikeout. Elizabeth Fioretti relieved Morris and allowed two unearned runs on four hits in 3.2 innings of action.
Rubinaccio banged out a career-high four hits in five at bats while she also drove in one. O'Leary added three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Therres was 0-for-3 with two RBI.
Hall provided the majority of offense for Lynchburg as she was 2-for-3 with the two solo homers.
In the contest against Meredith, all the offense came in the first inning of play. York got two runs in the frame as Vanessa Mendez had an RBI fielder's choice while O'Leary plated the Spartans' second run with an RBI fielder's choice. The Spartans left two runners on as took the 2-0 lead.
The Avenging Angels scored their three runs on a three-run home run by Emily Cooke.
The Spartans got just two more hits the rest of the way but couldn't get the game-tying run across the plate.
Freshman Sarah Thacker took the loss as she allowed three unearned runs on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work. She falls to 0-2 with the loss. Carrie Webster earned the win as she went five innings, allowing two runs on one hit with four walks and a strikeout. She improves to 2-0. Amanda Beirne picked up the save, allowing no runs on two hits to close out the Meredith win.
Rubinaccio, Mendez, and Katie Wickert each had singles for the Spartans. Cooke finished with three RBI to pace Meredith.
The Spartans return to action with a pair of games on Saturday in the tournament. The Spartans are slated to face Randolph-Macon and Virginia Wesleyan during day two of the tournament.
